I'm gonna lose this game
I've got no poker face
I'm not designed for this this this

You look over your shoulder, making sure your parents aren't around. "You don't have to keep checking Y/N. If your parents are secretly following us I'll tell them I forced you to hold my hand and walk down the street with me." Your boyfriend Calum says as he kisses your hand, trying to comfort you.

You smile up at him as the two of you approach the small bookstore you're walking to.

Well, sneaking and walking to.

Your parents don't really approve of your being in an interracial relationship, but you can't help but adore Calum.

"That's the twenty-ninth time, Duchess. I can take you back home. I don't want you worried, come on, we can go." Calum says, rubbing his thumb over the top of your hand lovingly.

Giving a kiss to his hand intertwined with yours, you shake your head, "No, no, I want to spend this time with you, but I can't stand that we have, to sneak around. I'm... I'm not made for this. It makes me sad, you know?"

Calum just kisses your forehead and eases you into a chair. "I know Duchess, I don't like it either. I'm gonna go get our drinks okay?"

If I could speak in code
I wouldn't be so bold
I can't control my lips lips lips

Calum sits there, talking and laughing. Your curfew isn't until 9 and your parents urged you to hang out on Fridays instead of sitting in the house.
The two of you are just preparing to leave, when your aunt walks in and spots the two of you hand in hand and approaches with an already skeptical look on her face.

"Well, look what I've found! Hey baby girl! How have you been? I was just on my way to visit you guys you know."

You hug your aunt and smile, "Hi Auntie, I've been great. Mom and Dad are gonna be happy to see you." You say nervously. Your aunt looks at Calum, "Me? Yes, but him... How close are the two of you?"

Calum squeezes your hand gently as you look down sheepishly, "About a year close. But Mom and Dad don't know. I really like Calum, but they...you know how they feel."

With a smile on her face, your aunt takes Calum's hand in hers, "Come on baby. It's time to speak with my brother and his bride." She says leading you and your now very nervous boyfriend out of the door.

When the three of you get to the door, Calum releases your kind aunt's hand and knocks on the door. "Coming!" Your father yells loudly as he nears the door. When it opens, his sister stands in front of the intimidated boy, "Y/F/N! How's my baby brother?"

He wraps his arms around her, "Y/A/N, you've..brought a boy...with my daughter." Your dad lets go of his sister and eyes you and Calum judgementally, "Is there something you want to say to me, sister? Because I run my house a certain way, and you're rocking a delicate boat."

With a scoff, your aunt pushes her way into the house, leaving you and your boyfriend to trail behind, "Some boats need to sink so you can see what you did wrong." You can't exactly tell what they were talking about, but you know what you have to do.

I've never been so alone
I tend to be too loud but
I'm not ashamed of my words

"Mom!" You yell for your mother and walk into the living room, everyone following behind you now. If someone was going to tell your family, it'd be you.

"Is everything okay, baby? Would you-oh, Calum. Hi darling, do you and Y/N have a project together?" Your mom, asks politely as she enters the room. She knows Calum, the two of you were friends, and she remembered him from the cookout you had last year.

"We all need to talk. I know the conversation won't be pretty, but I'm eighteen now, and I feel like I should be able to discuss matters with you and Dad like the adult I know am." you say almost sternly, looking at your parents, then to your aunt for courage.

Instantly, your father arches his brow and your mom sits down. This is probably the hardest thing you will ever have to do, but Calum didn't deserve to be hidden, and you know that.

Clearly I'm gone and I'm going
Into the deep end
Far over my head
It's so unfair

"Okay, Mom, Dad. Calum and I are dating." you say quickly after a couple of deep breaths. Her father sits beside his wife, "Y/N, you better shut your mouth with that talk. I don't find it very funny at all. Now your little friend can leave and-"

"No, Dad, this, this isn't a joke. Calum and I have been together for a year now." You interrupt seriously. You are already in over your head, so you figure you should just keep on going.

"I've tried to tell you, but I don't think you realize how intimidating you can be. If I said, 'You know Calum?' you would answer with, 'Yeah, what about him?' And I would never have the guts to say what I wanted.

"And it's not like he's a stoner or anything. He has a job, a car, he's never smoked or drank, and he's super smart."

After your explanation, your parents just sit there, staring at you. With no words but a sneer at Calum, you father stands and huffs away.

"Well, Calum, I happen to like you. But know this, if my baby girl has to keep another big secret from us, like pregnancy or even just heartbreak, I will rip that little head right off of your shoulders." Your mother says kissing Calum's forehead, "I'll talk to your father baby, but if you're happy, I'm happy." She says to you, making you smile.

"If she's happy, and you're happy, then I'm happy." Calum says as he copies your mother's actions and kisses your forehead.
