Lillian Short looked out of her car window as she passed by rolling green hills on her way to New York City to meet her aunt and uncle.  They said they had a special surprise for her.  Lillian couldn't wait to get there and see what the surprise was.

When Lillian and her family finally arrived in NYC, they decided to walk around Times Square for a little while before arriving at the house.  When the family passed a toy store, Lillian squealed in delight.  "Daddy, can we stop and look at the toys?  Please?" She begged.

"Alright Lillian but just for a little while." The dad said.

Lillian happily skipped into the store.  She then saw something that caught her eye in the back shelf of the store.  There was rows and rows of dolls lined up on one big shelf.

Lillian was amazed. She had never seen something so wonderful in her life. Looking at all the dolls in front of her she picked her favorite, a doll with straight brown hair, big gray eyes, and fine lips in a pretty white dress.

Immediately Lillian ran over to her and picked her up. The doll had a tag around her wrist. It said her name was Mirilla.

Lillian read the name and looked at the doll with admiration. "That's such a pretty name." She said aloud.

"Lillian, time to go!" Her dad called. "We don't want to be late to your aunts house." Her dad said once Lillian came sulking over.

Sadly Lillian walked out of the toy store and followed her dad. Once she was out she heard a voice that sounded so very sweet.

"Wait, don't leave me.  You will suffer if you do."

Lillian whipped around and looked back at the shop with fear. " Daddy!" She cried. "Someone told me I would suffer if I left. Help me!"

"Lillian, don't be silly. What you probably heard was conversation from people passing by. Now let's go." Dad said.

Lillian still was uneasy as she walked with her dad to find a taxi.  And then she heard it again, only louder and more high pitched.

"DON'T LEAVE ME!  YOU WILL SUFFER IF YOU DO!!"

Lillian then screamed as loud as she could.  Everyone stopped walking and looked at the little 10 year old sobbing in front of them.

Her dad yanked her arm and pulled her in a taxi.  "Now you listen to me Lillian."  Her dad said in a deadly voice.  "No more of this crying and screaming because of some silly passerby conversation.  I won't put up with it.  If this happens again, we are going straight home.  Understand?"

Lillian nodded and looked over at her mother, who had remained silent from the store to now.  Her face was pale and full of fear.

The poor taxi driver heard this, and nodded when the dad told him to take the family to the aunt and uncles house right away.
