Defense Against the Dark Arts

"Alright class, now that you have your weapons you should know something else about me. You'll notice that I armed you before telling you. There is a reason for that. I don't want you attacking with spells and creating something worse. If you feel the need to attack I want you to do it with a weapon where we don't run the risk of putting the rest of the school in danger. Now to that other piece of information you should know about me. I was born with the ability to do a certain brand of wand-less magic that is usually a trademark of dark magic. I am a Necromancer and an Umbrakinetic. This means I can control the dead and shadows. This does not actually make me a dark wizard as the magic is something I was born with, but it does mean that I can train you to deal with dark wizards who practice those arts. Some of you may have noticed my aura, believe your senses on that score. For those of you who haven't don't worry about it the ones who can will probably tell you if they think it's important. Now, any questions before we get started?" Professor Di Angelo asked. Nigel raised his hand.

"Yes Mr. Wolpert?" Professor Di Angelo said.

"What is the difference between your power and that of a dark wizard?" Nigel asked.

"Mostly? Application. I am very careful with how I use my power. The other difference is that I was born with my gifts, dark wizards have to do some pretty horrible things to attain their power. Necromancy, well, as a Necromancer you have to be really careful or you'll cause the spirit you call immense pain. That's the other thing about my gift, I don't have to worry about that. The catch is that if I call someone I knew personally too often I will drive both myself and the spirit mad with grief. Now there's another kind of Necromancy that I am also capable of that is only labeled as dark magic because people get touchy about desecration. I can raise corpses to do my bidding. As far as desecration goes it's about on par with archaeology and this one has nothing to do with the soul so it's just that most people find it creepy. As for Umbrakinesis it's not so much evil as it is dangerous. The problem is that you can mold shadows to a certain point and then the shadows start trying to mold you back. I actually have a story about that, but suffice it to say that I used shadows to travel from Epirus, Greece to Long Island, New York with a forty foot marble statue and I almost dissolved into shadows myself. Any other questions?" Professor Di Angelo explained. A girl raise her hand.

"Yes Miss...?" Professor Di Angelo said.

"Graham Professor. Will you demonstrate for us?" she asked.

"I suppose, but only one per lesson as it's quite draining so talk amongst  yourselves and decide which you'd like me to demonstrate today," he replied.

"We'd like you to raise a spirit today and we think it should be Colin Creevey," Miss Graham said.

"Your brother?" was all Professor Di Angelo said indicating Dennis. Dennis nodded.

"Alright. We need to do this outside and we need to stop by the kitchen on our way so put your swords away and grab your things so you can go directly to your next class when we're finished," Professor Di Angelo said. Grabbing his leather jacket off of his desk he swept towards the door where he waited for everyone to follow his instructions.

The class stood around a large hole in the ground into which Professor Di Angelo had dumped some food.

"Άνοδος και γονατίζουν πριν βασιλιά σας, ο οποίος πέθανε γενναία υπεράσπιση αυτού του σπιτιού σας !" he cried*. Suddenly the aria was filled with ghosts, many of whom looked familiar.

"Colin Creevey may partake of the food and drink and speak to us," he said and one ghost broke away from the crowd. The rest fell back, some disappearing all together. Colin bent down and ate some of the offerings, then he stood and walked up to Dennis.

"Can I talk to him?" Colin asked Professor Di Angelo over his shoulder.

"Of course, that is the main reason I raised you," he said smiling sadly.

"Thank you," Colin said and then turned back to Dennis, "It's alright. It's beautiful where I am, besides you were always meant for great things. I can see you from the beautiful place so know that I can see all the wonderful things you do and go grab your life by the horns. You're gonna be something great, you just have to let yourself." Colin smiled and Dennis smiled back tentatively.

"Okay, I will, but I miss you so much," Dennis said.

"That's alright, just remember I'm watching over you and it won't hurt so bad anymore," Colin said. Dennis nodded and smiled a little wider.

"Time to go Colin," Professor Di Angelo said quietly.

"Thank you my lord. We both really needed this," Colin said.

"I know. I wouldn't have agreed to this if you didn't. If either one of you had moved on it would have been more damaging than helpful, I'm just glad that was not the case with the two of you. Be at rest Colin," Professor Di Angelo said and Colin faded back into thin air. All of a sudden Professor Di Angelo looked very tired.

"Now, Mr. Creevey, if you would walk with me to the hospital wing. The rest of you are dismissed," he said.
