I am from mismatched socks, Newports and Softee hair grease
I am from the ever changing DMV. It sounds like people on the corner begging for change and people shouting lyrics and unknown rapper's names
I am from short grass and steep hills you ride your bike down
I'm from praying before every meal and intelligence, from Sharon and Lenox and Devon
I am from picking wood chips out of my hair and belting out R&B songs you hear on the radio
From respect your elders and get home before the streetlights come on
I'm from going to church every Sunday to listening to gospel on Sundays
I'm from proud African Americans, Party mix and Cheerios
From moving around and missing my diligent older brother to finally getting to bind with my busy aunt
From stumbling on Facebook and finding photos and smiling when I see my late grandma
I am from being silent, independent, and curious holding in a lot to say and now finally having people to talk with
I am from a crazy home where we fight, scream and argue, but love, care and have fun for one another
(I used a template to write this poem and I really liked it so I'm uploading it.)
