Chapter 10

Later...

Riker POV

"Riker, wake up!"

I opened my eyes, staring up at Zoey, confused.

"What time is it?"

"About 3:00 in the morning."

I pulled the covers over my head.

"Riker, get up!"

"I need a good reason to move."

"They found your brother."

I shot up.

"What!?"

"Come on. Everyone's downstairs, watching the news."

She took my hand, and led me downstairs. I sat on the floor near the couch, and pulled Zoey down on my lap.

Sure enough, they'd found Ross, but they couldn't get in to wherever it was that they had him.

There was a knock at the front door, so dad went to answer it.

A few minutes later, dad pulled me into the kitchen with a police officer.

"Riker, here's the deal. We can't get your brother out safely. And since they want to trade you for him, we were wondering if you'd want to act as bait to get your brother back. There's a 95% chance that you'll be fine," the officer said.

"I'll do it."

"Riker, maybe you should think about this first," dad said.

I gave him a glare.

"No! I'm doing it!"

Later...

Riker POV

I was laying on the couch, sort of regretting my decision. I'm scared...

"So what's the plan?" Zoey asked, kneeling down next to the couch so she was at my level.

"They want me to go there, and say that I want to be traded for Ross and stuff, and then they'll sneak in the back and stuff. And there's only a small chance that something will go wrong. So I'm pretty much safe."

"When are you doing it?"

"Tonight... They want me to get some sleep, but I can't because my mind just won't shut off."

"Well... When do you have to leave?"

"2 hours."

"Just try to relax."

"I can't! What if this is like the 5% that goes wrong!? What if one of us dies!? I don't want Ross to get hurt!"

Tears started filling my eyes. I can't even imagine losing my baby bro.

"Aw, Riker..."

I couldn't even speak anymore. If I did, my voice would be all high and squeaky because I'm upset.

Zoey left, and I managed to compose myself again. Zoey came back, and handed me a cup of tea. I just sort of shrunk down into a ball on the couch, pulled my knees to my chest, and sipped my tea slowly. Zoey sat beside me.

"I'm sure everything will go fine tonight, Riker."

"Yeah, well I hope so..."

Later...

Riker POV

I was in the back of a police car right now. I was literally trying so hard not to cry. Everyone had given me hugs before I left in case I "didn't make it" and instead of comforting me, it just made me feel even more worried and scared.

My heart wouldn't stop racing, it felt like I couldn't breathe, and my stomach was in so many knots. I don't think I've felt this nervous since playing one of our first shows.

I couldn't focus anymore. I kept playing with my hands, tapping my feet, and trying so desperately not to pass out.

The cop pulled into a deserted parking lot, and parked. If it was possible for me to feel any worse, I did.

He opened my door for me, and I slowly stepped out. It was dark out, and made me feel even more spooked.

"Ready, Riker?"

"U-uh... I-I don't know if I c-can d-do this..." I stuttered.

"You can, Riker. There's only a small chance that something will go wrong. We'll be at the back door while you're at the front. And while they're talking to you, we'll come in from the back."

"O-ok..."

My legs started shaking. They felt like jello, and I was afraid I'd fall. But I didn't.

I walked up to the door of the building. Everything was completely dark. I nervously knocked on the door. After a few seconds, it swung open, almost hitting me. One of Zoey's brothers was now holding a gun to my head.

"I-I'm h-here to t-trade for R-Ross," I whispered.

The guy yanked me inside. I saw the back door fly open, and Zoey's other brother shot the police officer. He slammed the door shut, and locked it. They locked the front door too.

He kept the gun to my head, and brought me down to the basement. I saw Ross in a dog cage. He shut the door, and I heard the lock click.

We were just in an empty room with cement floors and walls.

I sat down next to Ross's cage. I heard a bunch of shouting from upstairs, and then gun shots. Ross looked just as scared as I did. Hopefully the police are going to come through this door any minute, and come let us out...

But they never did.
