Chapter Two

Screw this.  My three best friends were becoming robots, and I was this complete human idiot that stood out like a retard.  What the fudge was wrong with the world?

I sat down on my bed as I waited for the time to pass.  In about half an hour, I'd have to go back to Science to 'study' more, if you call that studying.  We just talk a bunch about the cruel things that scientists do to humans, and why we should protest against that.  They warn us to never become scientists.  I think I just might become one, all because they say not to.  I like contradicting people for the fun of it.

I pulled out my Math book.  Yeah, I know, I'm behind in my studies, but math is definitely out of my leage.

Here's what part of my paper looks like:

EVALUATE:

______________ 1.  b - p when b = 7/12 and p = 4/9

______________ 2.  e/f + e/f when e = 15 and f = 9

SIMPLIFY:

______________ 3. 1/6x + 2/3

______________ 4. 1/2x + 1/3x + 1/6x

Yeah, yeah, I know, my line of intelligence sucks.  I think problems like these are hard, and I'm 16, but hey, I'm not THAT stupid.  At least I know that 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 whole.  Yeah, I know, I suck, no need to tell me.

"Attention, all occupants of the Base, you are to return to your fourth period class at this time.  Thank you," a voice sounded through the speakers.  And what can I say?  The speaker's voice sounded quite robotic too.  For all I knew, it probably WAS a robot speaking.  Or it was just an automated message.  But why had I never noticed that before?

Before I could think too much about it, I grabbed my Science book, my backpack, and raced out the dorm.  On my way towards the Science Lab, I crashed into Jessica and the boys.

"Are you feeling okay?" James asked.  His eyes were full of worry, not with a cold machine's eery eyes.

"I should ask the same for you," I replied slowly, meeting his eyes.

James turned to me with a confused look on his face.  "What do you mean by that?" he asked, looking at me carefully.

I turned away.  "It's nothing, don't worry about it," I quickly replied, before things would get too suspicious.

I could feel their eyes burning holes through the back of my head.  Why the heck did I decide to say that? I asked myself angrily.  I was ready to kill myself.

Together, the four of us headed back to our fourth period, Science for 9th graders.  The Instructor for this class is Instructor Smith.  She's a bit friendlier than most Instructors, but she's still and Instructor, a main part of the Base's staff members.  There are no secrets we can keep with Instructors, unless you want to get tortured.

Oh, did I mention the torturing bit?  So, you'd probably think that we'd just have demerits, right?  No, we get tortured, mainly that means getting our butts whipped.  Yeah, so much for the Base being the 'safe haven'.  Some people have actually died from the many beatings they recieve.  That's why most of us veer away from all Instructors and Commanders.

"Welcome back to class, everyone," Instructor Smith said as we walked in.

I wanted to throw up as I sat down by Jessica in my assigned seat.  Darn, I hated this class, it was the worst thing in the world, it turned out.

"Hurry up and turn to page 134 in your books, we're pressed for time here.  I was planning on showing you all a video, but that might not work out if we don't speed up," Instructor Smith said as she sat up on her stool in the front of the classroom.

The room filled with the crisp noises of pages turning.

"James, please read the first paragraph on page 134," Instructor Smith said.

James leaned over his book and began reading.  "When a mother is pregnant, she has a choice of either aborting the baby, or letting it live.  Abortion is a way of terminating the baby inside the mother's womb...." the reading went on.

After the first few minutes of class, I zoned out and nearly fell asleep, but every so often, Jessica would nudge me, making sure that I stayed awake, or I might suffer a whipping.

"So, Selena, what's the main reason for abortion?" Instructor Smith asked, sending a jolt through me.  Jessica's eyes looked like warning lights.

"Um, divorce?" I asked meekly.  Instructor Smith gave me a cold look.

"That's a detention after school today.  You'll be meeting back here and you'll spend an hour studying what we just learned," she said.  The bell rang.

"Class dismissed, and don't you dare forget to come back, Miss Selena," Instructor Smith said, glaring in my direction.

"Busted...." James muttered under his breath.  As soon as Instructor Smith looked away, I punched him.

Quickly we walked towards our next class, Math for 9th graders.  Sadly, Instructor Hex isn't as nice as Instructor Smith is.

If you're one second late to class, he'll literally threaten to chop your arm off and beat you with it.  If you're two seconds late to class, he'll threaten to boil you in acid.  If you're three seconds late, you're gonna get processed through a meat grinder.  If you're four seconds late...well, you get the idea.  Instructor Hex isn't exactly the nicest guy.

The thing that usually throws all of the girls off is the fact that Instructor Hex is 19, and he's extremely hot.  He doesn't look to threatening, but if you really piss him off, he's a wild animal you do NOT want to meet in a dark alley.  His eyes literally start glowing gold and red.

"Hello everyone," he said in his smooth tone.  I could swear that I heard a girl in the back of the room sigh.  I rolled my eyes.  Although Instructor Hex was cute, he definitely wasn't worth dying for.

"Hey, Hexy," a girl fawned.  Jessica, who still was sitting next to me, choked.

Instructor Hex simply ignored the flirting girl and got on with the lesson.

"I believe I assigned you some math homework yesterday.  Please get it out," he spoke calmly, surveying the classroom, keeping a sharp eye out for those who didn't do their work.

I reached into my backpack and dug around for the math worksheet that I had been looking over earlier.  My heart thudded when I couldn't find it in my homework folder.  I pulled out my three-ringed binder and began digging around.  No math worksheet was found.  I smacked my forehead.  Being careless as usual, I had left the worksheet on my desk in my dorm.

"Do you have your worksheet, Selena?" Instrctor Hex questioned.  Although his voice was quiet, it was full of power.

Heat raced up my neck and flooded into my cheeks.  "No sir, I left it in my dorm," I replied just as softly, if not quieter.

Everyone turned to me.  Instructor Hex's eyes torched over me.  "Selena, let's talk out in the hall," he said as he turned towards the door.

I slowly stood up, trying not to tremble.  Jessica held her breath, and out of the corner of my eye, I could see that both James and Montego had their fingers crossed.  Screw this, I'm dead meat, I thought.  I wondered if I should grab a piece of paper really quick and write out my will.

"Good luck, Selena," a guy named Jordan called out.

I wanted to melt and cry.  Instructor Hex was now out in the hallway.  "Selena?" he asked as he held open the door.

"Coming," I replied quickly.  I strode over to the door and walked out.  Instructor Hex closed the door behind us.

"So, why did you forget your homework?" Instructor Hex asked.  His gaze was quite furious.
