"I'm sorry?" I sassed as I looked up from the map on the table.
"You heard me, missy," the bartender said with an attitude I did not fancy
He was starting to get on my nerves, "What do you mean, I can't get to Neverland from here?"
"I mean," he said mocking my tone. "I'm not taking you to Neverland, and no one else here is bat-crap crazy enough to go anywhere near that place, so you are out of luck."
"I worked for you for six months! I did anything you asked of me and the only thing I asked for in return was the you help get me to Neverland, but now you have to nerve to tell me that you won't do that one simple thing?" I was about to cause a scene.
He rolled his eyes, "You didn't do much."
Now, I was mad. "I crossed realms for you! I almost died, I almost lost my magic because of you!"
Everyone in the bar was looking at us now, "You did what?"
I raised an eyebrow, "Shall I tell them?" I asked the disgusting man behind the bar.
He seemed to have lost him little attitude problem, but I was a worse person, so I hadn't exactly dropped mine
I stood on a chair, and watched the fear flicker in his eyes, "We all have our skeletons in the closets don't we? Well, my friend over there has got quite a big one, or at least he did. Now, I might not seem like much, but let's just say I have made a career for myself in getting ride of those skeletons."
"Oh yeah?" A man in the back challenged. "If your so good at getting rid of skeletons how come you don't get rid of all of ours?"
The bar laughed, and I fiend a fake smile, "You don't believe me. Well, I can't blame you really; why would you believe me?"
I paused for a moment, "Well, let me tell you," I stepped from the chair I was standing onto the table beside it. I, then, jumped from that table to another and so on until I got to the man who dare question me. "To get rid of someone's skeleton you have to know what it is first. That's why I'm just so so special. I can tell what your hiding in that closet of yours, which is why I am so good at my job. You don't need to tell me that you're cheating on your wife for me to know that."
"How did you-"
"You should really go home to her. Your son misses the bedtime stories you used to tell him. You know before you turned into a cheater."
The man huffed before getting up and leaving, "How did you know?" Another man asked.
I smiled," Well, as I'm sure you all heard. I almost lost my magic a while back, but you see the problem is that I didn't. Actually that's just your problem," I winked. "Or maybe I'm just that good at reading people. Maybe I'm just like Shelock Holmes."
I saw the confusion on their faces. "Who's Shelock Holmes?" I asked for them. "I told my buddy over here that I've crossed realms. Almost all of them actually, even the ones where no one has magic." I acted as if that was a horrendous possibility. "Shelock Holmes is a famous detective in one of the realms. Any crime could be solved by him. I'd like to think I'm like him ya know?" I smiled at them.
No one answered, so I told them, "The answer is yes."
A few men were getting a little frightened now which just so happened to be exactly what I wanted, "Good," I paused, then continued. "Now, he and I are just a little different. He solves crimes and exposes those who committed crimes, and I cover them up." I looked around the old tavern and checked the exits. "But, I've heard some stories in the past century or so about a boy who doesn't exactly need someone to bury his skeletons. In fact, I want to draw him out."
"Like Sherlock," a man with brown hair commented.
I smiled warmly at him, "Yes, like Sherlock. The only problem is that getting to his realm is a little difficult for a girl. He only likes boys."
The men laughed at my remark, and I jumped off the table onto the floor. "The boy is Peter Pan."
A dreadful silence filled the room. "Yes, Peter Pan is the boy I am hunting. He's the one who stole your son," I said to a man.
"How did you kn-"
I tapped my head, "Remember? Magic. I'm going to Neverland and I'm freeing the lost boys and bringing Peter Pan to justice. I just need some help getting there."
"Get off your soapbox, little girl." The bartender said.
I threw my head back and groaned, "You do realize I'm older than you don't you?"
He laughed, "It doesn't change the fact that no one here is gonna help you. I'm not gonna help you. And it's not like you're queen of anything, so what are you gonna do?"
"Fine," I said I was sick of him. I just hated that I had wasted so much time on him and in his bar. "But I'm going to Neverland with or without your help. I just hate to think that something might happen to you now that you've made me mad." And with that final word I stormed out of the bar's wooden doors and into the cold evening air.
I marched myself down the stone streets, I scoffed at this town. What kind of place still has stone roads? As I walked, I contemplated the words that the bartender had said. In a mocking voice I said, "'You're not the queen of anything what are you gonna do?'" How dare he! Oh he's gonna regret that. No, I'm not the queen of anything. "Not yet."
I marched down to the docks and watched my breathe fog up in front of me. The waves crashed against the wooden poles of the dock and I watched the foam fade into the water. I sat with my legs crossed on the edge looking into the dark water. "I did not spend six months of my life working for that pig for nothing."
The sound of boots on the wooden planks drew clothes to me. "Worked? For a pig? I don't believe it. A girl like you is too stubborn for that."
"A girl like me?" I snapped. "What's that supposed to mean?"
The man chuckled, "Calm down, I'm just saying I can't believe you haven't gotten what you wanted yet."
"And who are you to say that?"
"No one special I suppose," he scratched his beard. "Just a captain with too much time, enough gold, and nowhere to go."
I gasped, suddenly, "Do you want somewhere to go?"
He smiled at me, "Do you need to go somewhere?"
A wicked smile spread across my face, "How does Neverland sound to you?"End of chapter one. Vote (please) comment, darling, and share with other adventures!
