"Mom, what are you doing here?"
She stepped in without an invitation, looking around the room.
"Didn't Maya tell you I was picking you up?"
"Apparently she must have forgotten to tell me..." I mumbled. "But, you're early."
"I wanted to see your dorm. Now, if you would like to tell me about Niall." She turned around to look at me.
"Look, mom-"
"Are you two an item?"
"No, we're just-"
"Will you become an item in the nearest future?"
"Can you-"
"Because your father and I strictly told you to stay away from him and focus on your studies."
"Mom!"
She stared at me.
"Will you just listen to me?" I asked, sighing. "I know what you and dad said. But I'm nineteen as from today, and I'm old enough to make my own decisions. Niall isn't that bad. You're the one with a bad judge of character. Would Luke be a dangerous guy because he decided to get tattoos? Would Connor be out of line if he weren't in med school? You know nothing about Niall."
"But-"
"For nineteen years you've taught me how to treat people with respect and never judge a book by its cover. And now you're telling me otherwise? Punish me all you want for disobeying your "rule" about not seeing him, but it won't stop me from doing it. You and dad told me not to date him and that make me want to date him even more."
"Samantha." Mom sighed and slowly sat down on my bed. "The reason we forbade you from seeing him wasn't because of his... special appearance."
I frowned and crossed my arms.
"Ever since you were a little girl you've loved to paint. Whenever we picked you up at kindergarten we had to take the crayons out of your hand. And lately I've come to realise that you think we love you less because you decided to study art instead of medicine like your brother. But that is not true. You are following your dream. And on the day you're opening up your own art gallery, your father and I will be there, prouder than ever."
She looked at me with a sad smile.
"We're just afraid that this boy will distract you. I would hate for you to end up heartbroken and with a failed college degree. I know you're looking for your own fairy-tale and one day you'll find it." She laughed a little. "You always drew princesses when you were younger."
I smiled at the memory.
"And you're right. I know nothing about Niall. But I know you, Samantha. Art means everything to you and frankly... I don't think you should give up that passion for a boy. Ask yourself this; is he worth it?"
"I wouldn't give up art for anything, you know that."
"Love can make you blind." She said with the same sad smile.
"I'm not in love with Niall. I just... can we just drop this? I'm done with this conversation and really need to take a shower, so if you don't mind."
I opened the door again, meaning for her to leave.
"Sam." She sighed.
"I'll see you at the house at five." I shortly answered.
The little family get together was rather awkward and uncomfortable. I was expecting my dad to be angry, but apparently mom never told him about Niall. Maybe it was for the better anyway.
