Dedicated to my best friend: CarolineMarie21; Love ya sis 😘

• Two weeks earlier •

I wake up by the sun shining on my face as I covered my eyes. I get up from bed and I realized I had forgotten to close the curtains last night. I was so tired from work that I completely forgot about the curtains.

I close the curtains and I checked the time on the nightstand. It read, 8:00 a.m. I have about half and hour to get ready for college.

I entered the bathroom to take a quick shower. When I left the bathroom, I changed into a black shirt and shorts. I wore my black combat boots and a black choker on my neck.

I was putting on my bracelet when I heard my phone rang. It was a text from my best friend Amber.

A: Sis, are you ready?"

J: I am.

A: Ok awesome. let's go to Mickey D's to grab a bite to eat before class.

J: Sure I'm starving. Pick me up you brat. 😜

A: I'm outside.

J: Just let me grab my backpack and I'll be out.

I grabbed my phone and put it in my back pocket. I slung my backpack over my shoulder and bolted out the door.

I live alone in a pretty decent neighborhood. There's hardly any robbers around these parts in Seattle but I always keep a baseball bat for safety.

My father died when I was ten. He was going to take me to an amusement park in Florida but things changed when a drunk driver crashed into us. My father took most of the impact.

I took him out of the car and luckily he was still breathing but not for long. He was dying. He was covered in blood all over him and was wounded.

The thing I'll never forget was his last words, I love you Jess. You're my only daughter. I'll always protect you when I'm not here. I'll always be by your side.

"Don't leave me daddy!!" I screamed, hugging him and crying my eyes out.

"Take care of your mom. Be a good girl." Those were his dying words.

"Don't leave me dad! Please! I need you! Daddy!"

"Are you okay sis?" Amber asked me as I kinda zoned out for a moment.

"I'm fine why wouldn't I be?"

"You practically spaced out for a moment usually you're always talking about Stefan from the vampire diaries."

"Sorry I just have a lot in my mind."

"Oh, is it about your dad?"

I sniffled. "I miss him."

"Aww my poor sis. I know you do."

"He didn't deserve to die that day. We were going to an amusement park because I had told him two weeks before it happened. If it weren't for me, he'll still be alive."

"Don't blame yourself for this. It was that stupid asshole's mistake of drunk driving."

"Let's talk about something else before I start to cry in front of everyone here." I looked around.

"Anyways, you want to go to the bar with me on Friday?"

"Ugh, idk." I shrugged. I took a sip of my orange juice cup from McDonalds.

"Come on Jess! You need to get out more."

"I do get out just to the mall or Starbucks."

Yeah I know I'm not a basic preppy white girl who always orders Starbucks. Besides I work in one so I can get all the free coffee I can get.

Amber laughed. "I meant like you need to live a little and who knows? You probably meet a cute guy."

"Amber! I don't date."

"Why not? I'm seeing Tyler."

"Yeah that douche. He hardly ever calls you. You guys are always on and off. He only calls you when he feels like it."

"He does call me." Amber's phone beeped which meaning she received a text. "See, that must be him."

"Yeah sure."

She checks her phone and dumps her phone back on the table disappointed. "You're right. It's not him." She had her hand on her cheek.

"Amber you need to dump that piece of shit. He's no good. You need a guy who truly wants to be with you."

Look at me for an advice person. I had only one relationship. It was a guy named Johnny. I broke things off with him because he cheated on me with someone else.

"You're right. I'll call him right now." Amber said as she grabbed her phone and dialed Tyler's number.

When Amber was on the phone with that douche, I noticed a guy sitting by one of the Windows. I hadn't noticed him before maybe because I zoned out earlier.

He was wearing a black suit with a black tie. The weird thing was he just kept staring at me without blinking. Was he trying to hypnotize me or something?

I can't go too long without blinking. If you were in a staring contest, he would definitely win.

I decided to look through my phone to avoid his awkward stare. Occasionally when I would look up I could still see him staring at me again:

"Save it Tyler, it's over. I'm hanging up bye."

"But babe-"

I heard Tyler's whiny voice over the phone.

"I finally did it."

"I'm so glad you dumped that jerk."

"Jess, it's almost 10. We have to get going. We're going to be late for our first class."

"Shit!" I grabbed the McDonald's bag and orange juice. We both get up and throw away our bags in the trash. He was still staring at me.

How could this guy still be staring at me? Do I have something in my face or what? What is this guys problem? I was going to go over and give him a piece of my mind but I was already going to be late for class.

We walked out of the McDonald's place.

"Amber."

"Hmm."

"Look at the guy who's sitting by the window. He would keep staring at me the whole time."

Amber looked behind the McDonald's place for a second and looked back at me.

"There's no one there."

"What?" I turned around and sure enough he was gone. "But he was just there few minutes ago."

"Jess, this is why you need to get out more. Now you're seeing invisible men." "But I swear he was there."
