Chapter One; New Boy
Lucy's POV
I sat there, in form, thinking. I looked to my left, then to my right. No one was sitting around me. It was the beginning of Year 10 and still no one would sit with me. Oh well.
I sat there, listening to my teacher intently. He was going on about litter, recycling and other things like that. It was actually quite interesting. He was about to start talking about how littering caused pollution when he was interrupted by a knock on the door. Naturally, everyone turned around and their eyes were met with a sight that made almost every girl sigh. (Me being the exception). It was an adorable boy. He didn't look muscular, but he looked kind and cute. Something, even the most popular girl dreams of. I blinked. He was wearing the Year 10 tie and the dark blue in the material matched his eyes. I didn't recognise him, he must have been new.
He looked around a bit and Sir waved him over. He trundled up to the teacher's desk and handed him a piece of paper. Sir nodded and pointed over to my table, next to me. Fudge.
After all, I was the only one with a space next to me. It sounds so cliché really, that no one wants to sit next to the nerdy girl. (It's also very mean).
He sat next to me and started rummaging through his rucksack.
"Hello." I said. He didn't look up or turn around. Rude much.
I blinked again. He carried on as if he didn't hear me at all.
"Lucy, he can't hear you." Sir said. I gave him a questioning look.
He's a 100% deaf." Sir said, looking at the boy with sorry eyes. "Poor Callum couldn't get into any schools for deaf children, and his mum definitely couldn't afford to ship him away to a different country. So, here he is. It's a sad thought that he can't do anything without help."
Lots of people were snickering and talking to themselves now.
"A deaf boy? Ha, he must be as thick as a brick."
"His mum couldn't afford to send him away, he must be poor."
"He can't hear us, he'll be an easy target."
"This just ruins how cute he is."
This made me angry.
"Sir, he can come with me. I'll buddy him." I said, speaking up. Everyone looked at me. Sir smiled.
"That's very kind, Lucy. He is quite bright, tops sets in all core subjects, so I suspect he will be in your classes. Pity he can't hear..." Sir tutted slightly before turning back to the rest of the form and going on about recycling bins. I had had an idea.
But I was no longer interested in the recycling bins.
I nodded and tapped Callum on the shoulder. He looked up at me with those beautiful blue eyes. It was quite hard to breathe, but I stayed calm.
