Elly's POV
Anything in italics and ' ' is a mind-linkThe feeling of racing across the hills of Tennessee is all I live for! When I ride all I listen to is the thundering sound of the four hooves striking the earth. The quickening pace of my small paint mare showed me that she was settling into the fast pace. When I saw the edge of the horses pasture I slowed her down until we stopped in front of the white picket fence that keeps the horses out of the crop fields.
"Was that fun girl?" I said while patting her neck. She let out a high whinny as if saying yeah that was awesome!
"Ok then you want to head back?" I asked her as she turned her head to look at me. Her eyes said duh! There's food back there! I turned her back toward the barn and we started walking back for the 2 acre journey. While we were walking I stared thinking about the day I got Dakota.
I was four and my parents promised that I could chose the perfect match.
---
When we pulled up to the adoption facility with the trailer I was ecstatic. My mom and I got out of the truck as my dad pulled it around to the parking area. The barn was huge! I had never seen so many horses in the four years of my little life. The nice lady that owned the place showed us to the area of trained horses. My mom walked me up and down the rows of stalls until I came across a chubby paint mare. The woman told me her name was Dakota meaning friendship and when she stuck her nose over the stall door I knew she was the one. Instantly we clicked and I have been riding ever since.
My mom says I spend more time outside than I do inside. I mean it's true. It's just that when I'm out side I feel free and I get a new energy!
---
As I came back to reality I realized that I was smiling at the good memories and that we had almost made it back to the barn."That was really fun wasn't it girl?" I asked reaching down to pat her neck.
Almost out of nowhere my skin burned and a blue glow had appeared around me like an aura. I wanted to scream but I couldn't make any sound.
'I knew you had something special to you' I heard a silky female voice say.
'Who are you? Where are you and why are you talking to me?' I questioned getting really scared.
'It's ok you don't have to be afraid of me. I know what you are' replied the voice.
'Who are you.' I said a little sterner trying to get an answer.
'Well why don't you look down.' I did as the voice said and the only other presence was Dakota.
'I've gone insane. This can't be right, I mean a horse can't talk.' I thought.
'Then why am I able to talk to you?'
'I-I don't know. I'm not anything special I'm just a 16 year old girl that lives on a ranch in no-where's vile Tennessee'
'Yes you are to special. Did you see the blue aura around your body? I confirmed my theory of you. I know what you are even though you might not.' replied Dakota.?
'Well then what am I?' I demanded.
'Get off and I'll show you.' She told me. So I dismounted and she started walking to the pond nearby. She stopped and looked at me 'get closer to the pond and look at your reflection. What do you see?'
I leaned over the edge of the pond and I didn't see myself. I mean yeah, it was me but like me 2.0. I was already tall but now I looked as if I grew about six inches. Then my muscles that I had gained from working on a ranch my whole life seemed to have become more pronounced. I then looked to my face and saw that my blue eyes were more striking than normal and that my hair grew a few inches.
'I mean so what. My hair is longer and I am taller.' I said feeling even more confused. 'I'm going to wake up in my room and be dreaming. Yeah, that's right, I'm just a normal girl in Tennessee that lives on a horse ranch.'
'You are wrong. You are more than any of your family. You are special, let me show you how.' Dakota replied 'think about you but as a horse and don't stop till it happens.'
'What happens? And why would I imagine myself as-'
'Oh just do it why don't you?'
'Fine' I might as well give it a try. I thought of myself then a horse and focused really hard. All of a sudden a horrible pain shot through my body. I screamed as my body started contorting.
'Shh, I'm sorry the first shift is always the hardest and longest it'll be over soon.' Dakota said trying to calm me.
After what felt like hours the pain stopped and I felt really different. But in a good way, like the good kind of different and I liked it.
'Go ahead, take a look.'
Again I leaned over the edge of the pond looking into the clear blue water. What I saw scared me. I'm a horse. I am a horse.
'Tell me what you see' Dakota said.
I studied myself a little longer before talking 'I see a 17 hand Grulla/paint appendix with blue eyes.' I replied 'but what is going on? Why do I see a horse.'
'You are not seeing a horse. You are the horse.'
'That's impossible! I am a HUMAN girl'
'You are partially correct on that account.' She said chuckling 'You are a girl in your human form but when you shift you become your horse.'
'Stop! Why do you keep saying shift? I'm getting really annoyed here. Why am I a horse?'
'Because my dear Elly, you are a horse shifter.'
What?
