Chapter 1 : Gaia

The starry night above was better than any pictures. There were lighter patches, clusters of faint and bold light, the constellations altered according to the time of year. These are the same stars that greeted the ancients, the same ones who would be there in millions of years. I love the stars, despite being so far away, they have a way of keeping you happy and warm your heart.

All these years being alone in this world, you eventually learned to appreciate even the smaller thing in life and I am only 21 years old. I guess living in a world where only money and corruption being a way of life, you do not need to be like 100 of years to know life. I am Gaia Angeli, like everyone said, that you are on earth for a purpose, so I am also searching for that purpose in life.

"Gaia, Gaia"

"Yeah, coming"

I am sure that my aunt Rosali, is calling me to wash the dishes. I never met my real parents, and when I was 10 years old, my aunt told me that my parents died in an accident and she always avoids telling me how.

"You should be more responsible, Gaia, when you are assigned a work, you should be doing it"

"Yeah yeah"

I muttered, like she cannot do her own dishes. I am waiting for the day that I get to move into my own apartment, then I will see how she would manage the kitchen. - Yeah and you bring a box of popcorn to watch that, sarcastic Gaia muttered. My thoughts has a mind of its own, seriously.

"Going to bed, goodnight"

I said out loud, practically to nobody, as my aunt must be already asleep. Typical.

The darkness swirled around me, as I laid on my bed, curled under my covers. The silence echoing in my ears, the loneliness creeping in my heart, feeling alone in this crowded world is frightening.

"Wake up"

I squint to see who wanted to die in this early morning. Probably your aunt, who else, captain obvious Gaia thought. Waking up can be really harsh, especially if your dreams were better than reality. Slowly, I uncover my face. Streaks of sunlight penetrating the window blinding me. I sit up and drag myself off the bed, and rub my knuckles onto my eyes. I felt lazy today.

"Prepare your breakfast and make your bed"

My aunt said like she is in the army and was giving orders. I rolled my eyes at her tactics. Always commanding and not doing anything. I prepare some eggs and fried potatoes to eat and drink an orange juice. I am not fond of bread so better avoid that one. I remembered when my aunt was angry at me, she gave me bread to eat and hiding every other foods.

"Aunt Ro, today I will work till late maybe midnight, new stock entering and everything"

"You are not serious Gaia, you know that you are needed at home"

She said like I am leaving her forever. She has been acting strangely these past weeks, like she knows something will happen . But I know better, she would never tell me what is annoying her.

"I know aunt Ro, but for today, let me be there, or else my boss would fire me from this job and you know how important this job is."

She huffed and gave me the permission to stay late. I work in a small craft shop, and I love that job. Today there will be more stocks entering the shop as halloween is approaching and this month of the year, it is always busy. I still remember last year, where everything was almost sold out and customers were still coming in, so this year, we've decided to bring a little bit more stocks.

I wear a greenish-blue dress, long and loose, my sliver bangles and parfum. I grab my handbag and set off to work. The sun was already shining bright, some clouds travelling and birds chirping happily. It was a happy day.

As I entered the shop, the bell made a soft tinkling sound. Everyone raised their heads and smile, and get back to work.

"Aaric, where is Ami?"

"Good morning to you too, she is somewhere near the section of halloween shelves"

I thanked him and went searching for Ami. She's my best friend since kinder-garden and she is the quiet one but like me a mischevious one. I saw a pink hair bobbing around the section. I rolled my eyes at her ways, she is always hopping around.

"Ami, Ami"

I grabbed her hand to make her stop hopping everywhere. She turned and gave me a big smile. I raised one eyebrow at her. She shrugged and continued with her work.

"Seriously Ami, do not tell me you've forget to bring that for me"

I said to her in disbelief. She's always like that forgetting to bring my things and then make her sad puppy face with me.

"Oops, I forget about that, come by my house later and take it"

"Are you for real, I cannot believe you, Ami, you only have one work and it was to bring that thing with you"

I said a bit annoy, ok, a lot annoy. She pouts at me and made her sad puppy eyes. I groaned, seeing her like that. I can never be angry with her for long time.

"I am sowee, Gaia"

"You can be sorry but you know my aunt, my arse will be sorry if I get home even one minute late"

I said to her, and she knows that.

"Gaia, you are needed at the front section" Aaric said.

"Yeah okay, and Ami you better be here if I get scolded again"

She muttered something about being an adult but still being treated like a child. I know that, my aunt treats me like I am still 9 years old, but I never really mind it. Yeah, pacify yourself with those lies, muttered sarcastic Gaia.

"Hey Aaric, you needed me"

"Yes, you will need to fill out this section when the stock arrives, Bea will help you"

He said, continuing to do his paperwork. I agreed and went to see if Bea was already in to help me.

"Hey Bea, you ready for tonight"

"Yeah, but we will be tired as hell and tomorrow I need to wake up early to buy some stuffs for my grandma"

"Oh, by the way, your grandma's health has improved?"

"Yeah, she's fine now"

I wondered what her grandma had, she was extremely stressed out that day and went home running like a madwoman.

"Gaia, you are here, I have been searching for you"

"Why searching for me? "

"Nevermind, just telling you that today I will be having dinner at my cousin's place, so ..."

She eyed me hesitantly, I know that she is saying that I will not be able to get my thing back.

"It's okay but you better return that to me, you know that it belonged to my mother"

"Yeah"

I clasped my hand and went outside to see if the van has come or not. It was late in the afternoon, and no sign of the van. I huffed and was about to enter the shop when something moved in the parking lot. I squinted to see what it was but could not see anything. I shrugged and went inside, as it was getting cold.
