Looking around my room, it felt like nothing in the dark was safe. Only the shine of the moonlight circled me. I slowly sank back onto my pillow while wiggling my fingers and toes to make sure they were still there. I looked over at my clock to check the time and the green numbers read back the most dreadful time, 5:30. I had about 30 minutes to cherish a dreamless slumber.
"Was it the dream again?" My stepmom said as I jumped about 60 feet in the air.
"God... damn it you scared me," I sighed rubbing my temples, noticing it was just her. She always did this, always. She must have a mental block when it comes to me arguing about need for personal space, and about how I never wanted to talk about my dreams. I narrowed my eyes and looked over at her. She was leaning on the door with her hair in curlers and a full face of make up on. If you asked me, she looked like a damn prositute after a night of gaining all of $5.
"You were screaming again, louder than ever."
"Ah gee, I'm sorry for my mentally scarring dreams. I forgot you need all the help when it comes to getting "beauty sleep," I air quoted, annoyed. God, was she clueless.
"Was it bad?" she asked ignoring my aggrivated tone.
"Nope, not at all. I was just screaming just to wake you up!" She really is Captain Stupid on the S.S. Idiot.
"Your father sent me to check on you. I was just putting my make up on..."
"Like I care abour your face," I mumbled. This is the last thing I wanted to do. My eyes flicked over to the clock. 5:45.
"Do you want to talk about it? My professor said it helps to talk about these things."
"No there really is no point. They never leave and never will," I sighed in defeat. This is the last thing I wanted to do today, or any day. She frowned and looked down, thankfully not pressing it anymore. I looked over at the clock. 6:00.
"Now if you excuse me, I have to get ready for school. Sorry for interrupting you." I rolled my eyes. She backtracked out of my door way an headed down the hall. I got out of bed, pushing back my sheets, and shut the door. There should be a law against having to get up this soon. So I was going to look like a zombie on the first day of school, nothing new.
I walked over to my light switch, shut my eyes, and turned on the light. My room was engulfed in light and I let out the breath I just realized I was holding in. Nothing had been touched or tampered with. I padded over to my closet to choose out my outfit. I think I am going to be the only one sporting last year's fashion. I opened my closet and chose a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, a white t-shirt, an OSU sweatshirt, and my white converse. Yup, definitely last year's fashion. I gathered my clothes and headed for the bathroom. Just as I opened my door, Jake came stumbling out of his. We made eye contact and he smirked. Both of our eyes darted to the bathroom.
"Don't you dare Jake, I swear I will phiscally kill you," I warned.
"Nothing like a good race to wake you up in the morning..." He shouted and ran for the door.
"Jake!" The door slammed in my faces and he laughed.
"Damn you Jake, you take 85 years just to wash your hair!"
"Oh come on Andy, don't be a sore loser!"
I smiled and said," Just don't forget to wash under your man boobs!"
I heard the shower turned on I turned on my heel. Looks like I have a good 15 minutes to spare before I have to take an ax to the door and drag him out. I went back to my room and began to get my stuff together. I dug around in my closet and found my bookbag. I stuffed it with my gym clothes, a few binders, some paper and a few pencils. Taking gym as a Junior, unheard of. As I tried to find my planner, my phone buzzed.
"Hey babe, pick you up in forty. Try to at least look presentable. -Maddi"
I grinned and put my phone in my front pocket of my bookbag.
"Hey Andy, bathroom's your's" Jake shouted from the hallway.
"Took you long enough jackass! Ever heard of ladies first? Oh wait, you are one!" I laughed and listened as his laugh echoed down the hallway.
"Just get in the damn shower Green!"
I closed my closet doors and walked to the hallway. I flicked on the light switch and inhaled the steam of the previous shower. I stripped down and turned on the water, shivering at the new heat contact. I got in, shut the curtain, and let the warm water run down my face and back. I wanted this water to wash every bad feeling and ache away. I wanted to fill my head with it's steam forever. Sadly, I think I would need a Hogwart's shower for that. I finished my shower and got out. I dryed my hair, shimmed into my clothes, and put on my make up. Back to the old routine, hopefully different from last year. I pray it is different. As I turned to leave, Jake filled the door way.
"Now who takes 85 hours to get ready?" he grinned as I smacked his arm.
"Shut up and get downstairs you idiot."
He stomped downstairs and I quickly followed. The smell of coffee and bacon filled my nose. Leave it to dad to know just what to have ready.
"Hey dad, what brings out the bacon?" I asked as my brother plopped down in the seat in front of him. My dad had his reading glasses on with a newspaper in hand. He put the paper down, looked up, and smiled.
"Well it's the first day of school and you are a Junior this year. And your brother is a Senior this year, might as well get him ready for football tryouts."
"Dad, you already know he is a shoe in for quarterback and Junior year is nothing special. What is this really about?"
He sighed and picked the paper back up, "I heard you with your mother this morning..."
"So this is sympathy food? She didn't even make it? How sad is that?" I scowled.
"Oh come on Andy! She is trying her best. If you were only understanding like Jake..."
"Well, I'm not Jake am I? I'm not going to open my arms to her and sing camp fire songs like we are a real family! She is a college student dad. A COLLEGE STUDENT. Your affair with her ran mom away and I have no respect for her. I'm sorry if I can't forgive and forget like Jake," I darted my coldest stare to my father.
"It's been a whole year..." Jake began.
"Don't even start with me Jake." I challenged. He raised his hands up in surrender. I heard a car beep and that was like heaven's harp.
"Now if you exuse me, I would like to get out of here before the she devil comes down. Jake, I will see you at school. Tell Katie I said bye." I grab an apple and head out the door.
