Chapter 1

Visitor

Brianna Scott detested the weather. It was so windy that her long, chestnut-brown hair was slashing at her face. Tugging her hair behind her ear, she wished she was back in her hometown, Rosaville, Prince Edward Island. The climate was warm and sunny there, but here in Martin, it was dark and gloomy. She missed her old home, a small blue cottage right just beside Northumberland Strait. Martin is a tiny town, just below New York City. Barely anyone knows about it. Moving to Martin was a big challenge for her. She had to leave everything behind... her hometown, friends, and mostly, her beloved family. Her parents were divorced, and she now lived with her mother while her little sister, Kimberly, lived with her father back in Rosaville. Too deep in her thoughts about her family, she did not notice someone approaching her.

"Hey," boomed a voice.

Startled by the noise she dropped her notes and she watched as they fluttered to the ground. She turned around and spotted her friend, Warren Smith.

"Sorry I’m late; I had to help my grandma find her glasses. She’s always losing them," sighed Warren. “Come on Brianna, the library's closing at 6 and we still haven't started on our history project."

"Coming," replied Brianna as she knelt down to pick up her notes.

The library was one of the oldest buildings in Martin. Once inside, they sauntered to the furthest table, just beside the fireplace. It was their favorite spot in the library. Brianna loved sitting the closest to the fireplace, because it kept her warm like a big blanket.

"So, what are we researching about again? Oh I remember that guy who found that big bay up in Canada and the river in New York but then his crew left him. What's his name again?" asked Warren, scratching his head with confusion.

"That guy is called Henry Hudson, the famous explorer who found Hudson Bay and Hudson River," replied Brianna as she took her notes out from her backpack. Warren sighed as he reached for his backpack to take his notes out.

"When is this even due?" asked Warren as he flipped through his notebook, searching for the date.

"It’s due next week so we have to finish it now and make sure it’s handed in on time," answered Brianna as she walked up to one of the shelves and pulled out a big, dusty book about explorers. Sweeping the dust off the book, she flipped it open to the index and searched for Henry Hudson. "Page 36," she whispered under her breath as she flipped to that page.

They worked in silence for about two more hours, until Warren broke the silence.

"It’s almost 5. I have to go home for dinner," he said as he stood and started to pack up. Looking at the clock up on the wall, she found out that they had worked 2 hours on their project.

"I have to go home too. My mom gets mad when I’m late." Swinging one side of the backpack onto her shoulder, they started to walk home. The weather changed dramatically when she stepped out of the library. Suddenly, pain shot through her head and she collapsed onto the cold icy steps of the town library. "Are you OK?" ask Warren with concern as he knelt down to help her up. As he knelt down, the same thing happened to Warren and he collapsed right beside Brianna. Wind whipped through both Warren's and Brianna's hair. Sand flew into her eyes making her vision blurry. Paper bits and confetti floated everywhere like snowflakes. Then, big drops of rainwater plunged to the Earth with a "plop".Abruptly, the multi colored paper bits and confetti stopped coming, but the remains moved slowly in the air like flies in amber. All of a sudden, a bright light flashed and everything disappeared. Looking at Warren, she saw his brilliant green eyes twinkling, like it always did when he was nervous or excited. He looked pale under the dim streetlight.

"That was so freaky! I wonder what that was," he mumbled as he stood up and tried to squeeze the rain water out of his wet clothes. Standing up, Brianna stared up at the sky. She scrunched up her eyebrows thinking about the crazy scene that she and Warren had just experienced.

Shaking her head as if trying to clear those scenes out of her mind, she muttered, "I have no idea." They were both in shock as they stood up. Hands trembling, Warren knelt down, picked up Brianna’s backpack and handed it to her.

"Thanks," she muttered as she flipped it onto her back

"We better go home before anything else happens to us. Bye," mumbled Warren as he stood up and walked the other way.

Brianna whispered, "Bye," but he was too far to hear her reply.

The woods were one of the places that you wouldn't want to go to at night time. Big shadows casted on the ground as Brianna walked pass. Passing a tall tree, she saw something glowing behind a bush. It was the color, turquoise. She strode cautiously, trying not to make any noise. As she walked closer, she felt a wave of heat pushing her backwards, she took a step back. Suddenly a flash of light as bright as the sun came from the glow and she averted her eyes. The light dimmed, and she turned to see a young maiden. She was about her 14, with honey-blonde hair and brilliant ocean-blue eyes. In her hand was a silver bow and arrow, pointing straight at Brianna's face. Their eyes met for a moment and she saw anger in her eyes. Suddenly, she let go of the arrow and it came speeding towards her, as fast as a cheetah. A scream of agony pierced through the night air…….
