[Chapter 1: Sanctuary]

[Edited]

With one final heave, I slid the last, and probably heaviest box, into the foyer and shut my front door with the back of my foot.

I let out a puff of air as I sat down on the box, silently thanking myself that it contained my small library of books so that it wouldn't collapse under my weight, and vigorously rubbed my aching legs.

I had been active ever since I got here on Star Island.

From the meeting with the chief of Star Island police, William Gray, to signing off on the house and arranging things at Crosswell Academy, because as of tomorrow, this beach house and the school, would be my new home.

At least until things blew over and I would be able to return to California with my mother, and resume the search for my father, who went missing 2 weeks ago from his plane.

This was just a minor setback. Hopefully.

And judging by the obvious opulence and the mindless luxuries that my neighbors had acquired along with their homes, it wouldn't be hard to treat this place as a setback.

It wasn't like I could make friends here anyway.

Looking around once again, I realized this place was small, but it did scream Star Island elite. Marble was expertly spread out through the entire first floor along with that special white textured wall that fit and complemented the airy and bright open spaces.

The kitchen had all the latest and greatest stainless steel appliances along with a blue tinted marble counter top. Tucked away in the corner, near the bay window with plush, white seat cushions, was a small but solid oak dining table set for 2. A vase of white roses was its only accessory, but it did work with the decor of the room.

The living room  had a 3 seat-er couch, a 2 seat-er couch and a one person couch with an ottoman, all adorned with blue accent pillows of various shades. A glass table with a bowl of shells and glass coasters were on top of the table. The wrought iron frame beneath it had an intricate swirl pattern and it reminded me of the ocean right outside. One of those plasma screen TV's was suspended above shelves of already pre-bought dvds, cds and a surround sound system that had speakers hidden in the corners of the room. Along the walls were different sized paintings of ocean scenes some of which were breathtakingly beautiful.

If marble didn't occupy the floor, polished wood took it's place, shining when the fading sunlight hit it at a certain angle. Right next to the foyer and through a wall was the formal dining with a solid oak table that was bigger then the one in the breakfast nook and could hold six people. The window that was in the room let you look out into the front law. But even with beautifully cut emerald lawn, the tropical plants and the mansions in front of it making a picturesque sight, it still didn't beat the ocean view from behind the house.

From my previous excursions before signing the paper work on the house, I had a chance to explore the master and regular sized bedroom upstairs, the large office, laundry room and the garage on the lower floor extensively.

But what really made me fall in love with this house was the fact that the entire back-wall of the living room was made of glass, which enabled you to see the lawn, the palm trees, the fully equipped outside kitchen on the mosaic tiled porch, another 6 person dining table that matched the porch and of course, the iron gate that led out onto the beautiful ocean view.

The sun was setting rapidly, casting a serene orange and red glow over the crystal clear water. And way above the sun, the sky had darkened to a fantastic purple and inky black, greatly contrasting the bright colors below.
