Chapter Eight
Jenna’s brown eyes went big when she saw the alert on her phone. “Dave, turn the car around. Get to my house.” She spoke with a rising panic in her voice.
“Why, what’s wrong?”
Jenna looked at him. His jaw was tight, probably fearing the worst. “I have a silent alarm in my house, it just went off.”
Dave’s tires skidded to a halt as he corrected the direction that he was headed in. He quickly reached over and grabbed a siren to plug in to the cigarette lighter socket. After it was plugged in, he rolled down his window and secured it on top of his car. A loud scream wailed out from the object and the car continued to accelerate past cars to get to Jenna’s house. “Call Brandon, tell him to meet us there. Do you have it so the police are called automatically when the alarm goes off?”
Jenna exited out of the alert and started dialing Brandon’s cell number while she spoke. “Yeah, they should already be on their way. Dave,” she looked at him again with worry in her eyes, “do you think this has anything to do with the case?”
“Don’t think like that. We have no idea; for all we know it could have been a glitch in the system.”
Dave turned into Jenna’s neighborhood just as Brandon answered the phone. “Hello, this is Brandon.”
“Brandon, its Jenna. I just got an alert on my phone with regards to my security system…someone might have just broken into my house.”
“Where do you live? I’ll be right there.” Brandon said, with no room to argue.
Jenna wasn’t sure she wanted Brandon going through her house or knowing where she lived for that matter. But she figured if she didn’t let him come, it would look a little suspicious.
“1450 Maple Street. I’ll see you in a few.” She hung up the phone and looked up as Dave drove in front of the house surrounded by three black and white squad cars already. Her face lost another shade of color. She took a deep breath and opened the door to the car and got out. Rushing up, an officer put his arm out to stop her.
“I’m sorry, we’re not letting anybody in the house yet.”
“This is my house! I’m a detective, I’ll know if something is amiss. I need in there!” Jenna pleaded with the officer.
“We just need the all clear from our guys and then you can go on in with gloves, okay miss?” The officer said calmly.
Jenna crossed her arms and slumped her shoulders. She knew it was just procedure but couldn’t they have made an exception? She heard a car pull up and looked over her shoulder to see Brandon get out of his car. He looked concerned but Jenna was a bit annoyed that he had showed up so quickly.
“Have they found anything yet?” Brandon asked as he walked up closer to her. “How are you? Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine Brandon. I don’t need you here.” She didn’t mean to say that. Looking back she saw that Brandon was taken aback by this and she felt a tinge of guilt. “Sorry…I didn’t mean that. I’m just…” She paused.
Brandon walked passed her to talk to the officer. Jenna couldn’t tell if he was mad or not. She threw her head back and groaned.
Finally the police came out of her house giving them the all clear to go in. Jenna quickly went inside and Dave and Brandon followed in behind her. Looking to her left, then to her right, she took a step inside and slowly let her eyes travel around the room. Nothing. She saw nothing. Quickly, she paced to the kitchen and searched franticly. She needed a reason for the alarm that had gone off. Without a reason, she will go insane.
