Again, the sensation of moving coursed through my senses; I could feel myself traveling though I remained still. But this time, my companion was absent from my side. I crouched, looking at the empty space around me, searching for my kin. A growl rose from my chest when I found no trace of the boy.
“Somebody shut that thing up!”
A dark figure leaned over me, a sharp, thin stick in his hand. My instincts blaring, I flung myself away, knowing that the stick would only bring me pain. It glistened mockingly, taunting me with its mere presence. The figure plunged it deep into my arm, and a high pitched whine fell from my lips. As soon as the stick was ripped from my skin, my body slumped to the floor, and out a porthole, I watched the sky. Dimly, I heard a small zip sound, and scornful laughter. “No bodyguard today, you bitch.”
Something was inside me, ripping painfully, searing me from the inside out. My skin was freed, but the cold air that slapped it was unforgiving, cruel. Loud cackling sounded somewhere above me, but I was not there to hear it. I was floating. I was up in the clouds, floating higher, higher, higher. I was free, I was gone, and I was not there. I wasn’t there. I wasn’t there....
My body shook as I looked with unforgiving eyes on these strange animals in front of me. My companion had not yet returned; I felt her presence far off, slipping in and out of my fingers. The animals in front of me were unsmiling; they looked ready to leave if I made any sudden movements. Fists clenched at my sides, I shuffled forward, stumbling slightly on two clumsy, frozen limbs. A growl rose from my throat, and almost unconsciously, a strangle gurgle sounded.
“Where is she?”
The animals looked startled, their eyes going wide. They scrambled backwards, towards the door that would separate us, cage me, hold me. I towered over their pathetic crumpling forms, and again that strange gurgle came.
“Where is she?”
A sudden sting, sharp and cold, slapped my chest. I crouched and snarled, taking defense of my being as I searched for a threat. I sting grew sharper, colder, more malicious as my snarls intensified. Just then I saw it: my companion. She was limp, her eyes wide and staring at nothing. The dark tendrils that usually bunched around her face were pulled back by a harsh hand, dragging her to the dungeon. A red haze fell over the room, and I felt the last of my humanity flee, leaving what cold monster was left to take its place.
A/N Sorry it's short. This is mostly a filler chapter to show that the characters still had their humanity (this will be important later on.) I'm going to try and upload more, but with school this year everything has been hectic. Thank you, for anyone who has stayed with John and Violet this long.
