So here it was, I couldn't believe it was in my hands. Finally it's ours. Finally we could all look at each other, with smiles on our faces.
"You ready?" I asked just to check before I unlocked the case. I could tell that they were all just as excited as me, by the way they nodded to answer my question. Then I flipped the locks and opened it slowly. I had to open it slowly for affect right? You know, to make it more dramatic. I didn't need to look at it anymore, I could already feel it was there. I looked up to see what the others were doing and met Patrick's gaze, who was grinning at me. It's good to see him so happy. You never know, it could be the last time he will ever smile.
He gave me a little nod of his head to let me know he was ready for what was coming, I returned it then locked the case again.
"So guys you're all sure about this right?" Patrick asked, I could tell he was just making sure we were okay with it.
"Yeah sure man, it will be worth it. Anyway, maybe nothing will happen" Joe could tell what Patrick was thinking too as he was trying to reassure him. Patrick smiled a little at him as I tightened the cuff to the case, then his wrist. This was killing me inside. I couldn't believe I was risking one of my best friends just for a tiny thing. But it was too late to turn back now. All I can do is help it run as smooth as possible. And at least try to stop them getting all of us. I already fear that Patrick has no chance.
"Remember, the bird is the sign" I had to take control. Although when I looked at them all, it was clear Andy was confused.
"But how will we know if we've been caught?" he asked sounding puzzled.
"Trust me, they'll let us know" I really didn't want to tell them how I knew or what I knew. They wouldn't want to go ahead with it if they knew everything, I had to keep my mouth shut. My heart was beginning to race in fear, I can only imagine what Patrick is going through right now in his mind.
I wanted to make sure the guys were clear on everything before it went ahead.
"So Patrick you will be leaving first. We can't all leave together, it wouldn't be safe" Again I had to take control. No one said anything. We stood in silence. The tension was getting higher the longer the silence dragged on. Luckily, after not too long, Patrick picked up the case and began to move.
"Good luck buddy" Joe muttered to Patrick while giving him a brotherly hug. I could stop all this now and this wouldn't be their last goodbye. I can't believe I'm going through with this.
"Catch you later stumpy" Andy waved to Patrick as he said it. I wonder if they are all dying inside like me? When I look at Patrick I can't help but wonder what exactly is going through his mind. Is he anywhere near as scared as I was?
He must have realised what I was thinking because he started speaking to me.
"I'll be fine Pete. You know I can do this and I'll be careful" It made me feel so much better that he was trying to reassure me. The fear didn't fade but I gave him my usual kind of hug by pulling him to me by his hand and patting him on the back. I hope it makes him feel more confident.
"Be careful. You know what they can do" well...at least he knows some of what they can do. Which made things worse as he may have raised false hopes.
"Don't worry. We will save rock and roll" Then he turned and left. Once again, I died inside. He had his hopes up, I could tell. My heart was beating so fast with fear. Now we just have to await for the first horrific event. It was going to happen.
