Red. The color that everything starts to fade into as the leaves fall. It's autumn and I'm fifteen. Next year I'll be a sophomore. My dad is having me rake the yard as even more leaves fall around me. I laugh because it seems as if the trees only want to make my task harder. " Jackson!" My mom calls me inside for dinner and I tell her that I still have a lot to do in the yard. This time, she laughs because she knows what has been happening. I apologize for not finishing as my dad shows up and tells me that I can finish tomorrow.

Dinner is, of course, delicious. We eat spaghetti with Parmesan cheese dusted on top. On the side, we have garlic butter bread that is still fresh out of the oven. My parents, in my opinion, are master chefs and yet they both work in our small, family-owned restaurant. They pay a few people to be waiters and chefs. They do not make a ton of money but it is always enough to get us by. Soon, I think that I might see if I can get a job there. Dessert is a brownie or two with cream cheese frosting on top. My mom and dad never fail to impress me. I just wish I was born with their skills. The last time I tried to cook, we ended up having to buy a new oven and go out to eat.
We watched a movie and  was about a little boy who could use weird superpowers at will. He could breathe fire, grow horns, or even speak to animals. Eventually, the boy realized that all of his adventures were merely a dream.

After the movie, we all sleepily said our good nights and went off to bed.

That night, I had a dream about having superpowers - but I forgot it by the time I had sat up in bed.

The sun was peeking through the windows and creeping across the floor. I quickly got up and dressed myself as I smelled the embracing scent of cinnamon rolls in the oven. I raced downstairs and pleaded with my mom to let me help her but she very much insisted that I sit down. As I looked outside, I noticed the yard which still was in need of cleaning.

As I eat my breakfast, I gaze at my mom as she works on the dishes. Something seems to be on her mind. I ask," What's wrong?" She turns around and looks at me with tear filled eyes. " I have something to say to you." I wonder what it could be as she calls dad into the family room. He seems to know what it is as he arrives, nods, and bustles off into another room.

Mom takes her seat on the couch adjacent to the one that I sit in. As we sit in silence and listen to dad rummaging around in the other room, I ponder what could be so important that we would need to have such an important conversation as this.

Dad returns with something clutched in his hands behind his back. After giving an understanding nod to mom, he sits next to her on the couch and looks at me with something clearly weighing heavily on his mind. He explains in painstakingly slow words how he wants me to keep an open mind and to try to just listen to what he has to say.

Out from behind his back he removes a small envelope with a red wax seal on it. On the front I notice that it has been addressed to a very important sounding figure, but he hands it to me. I hold it gingerly, careful not to damage it. I remove the seal and slide the letter out of the envelope. What I see is unbelievable.

This is the end of prologue-1/4. In all honesty, prologues 1-2 are a little cheesy. But please eat the 🧀 cheesiness and bear with me. I PROMISE it gets WAY better. It's just cheesy prologue. All books have it.  With love, O88❤️( the author)
