Willa Fitzgerald as Elizabeth Hayden

***

Family dinners were always awkward after Mom left, and they became even more awkward when Jen joined the family. The woman was too tall, too pretty, too sarcastic and too bitchy. She held everyone's attention with her bright eyes and made Ana feel stupid under her gaze. Steve's call made it a little better but not by much.

Jen was sitting up straighter now, flicked her black hair over her shoulder. They'd just spilled the news that Josiah and I had known for two weeks now: Jen and Dad were getting married. The only person who didn't know was Elizabeth.

My sister was steaming mad, body shaking and her eyes scrunching up. That was tell-tale sign that she was trying not to cry. It wasn't her fault she didn't know. She was with her mysterious boyfriend we've never met.

Josiah's jaw was clenched and he was angry, I could tell. I didn't blame him. He was Jen's ex. That was how Jen and Dad met actually, through Josiah. It was a sad day when they broke the news that they were "in love".

"Well?" My father cleared his throat, nervously squeezing Jen's fingers.

"You're an ass." Lizzie declared.

"Sweetheart.." Our father started.

"Stop." Lizzie stood up, holding her hand up. "I don't want to hear it."

My phone vibrated suddenly and I pulled it from my pocket and opened a message from Natasha.

Nat XOXO: Wanna see something you're gonna love?

Nat XOXO: Make him shave the beard, Annie.

Me: I kinda like it.

Nat XOXO: Traitor.

Me: Just joking ;). I'll text him. <3

I glanced up at my siblings and guardians. It was stupid how they were fighting. I was glad that my Senior year would be done in a few months and I could move in with Lizzie in her apartment up in New York. It was going to be nice.

...and to meet Steve.

I shook my head and stood. "That's enough." I declared, a bored look on my face.

"Sit down." Jen said harshly.

"I'm not dealing with this crap today." I threw my hair over my shoulder. "Later." With that I spun on my heels and strode out the door confidently, like the boss I knew I was.
