Babysitting the Gallagher Boys
“Alright, Autumn. All of the emergency numbers are on the fridge, call me if you need anything. I’ll be back from my banquet around midnight or so. They boys shouldn’t be any trouble, but if they are you just need to let me know and there’ll be no phone, xbox, etcetera, etcetera. Nico and Mason will be here all day, but Victor won’t be here untill tomorrow morning. I hope you don’t mind sleeping over, Nico gets scared, you know. Payton will be home at seven o’clock. Presuming I’ll be home at midnight, you’ll be making ninety dollars today. Any questions?”
“No, Mrs. Gallagher.”
“Oh, sweetie, call me Deborah.”
“Okay, um, Deborah.”
“Okay, see you tomorrow. I presume you’re staying until noon?”
“Yes, Deborah.”
“Okay, great. See you then.”
The heavy oak front doors slam shut, and I spin around on my heel and look at the humongous house I’m in. Two white leather couches sit around a glass fireplace, accented by vibrantly colored pillows. A 72-inch plasma-screen TV is mounted above the fireplace. The kitchen has a marble island in the middle, complete with two stoves, a microwave, a giant refrigerator, a bar area with five modern white stools, around twenty-eight cupboards, and a TV about the size of a laptop. Suddenly, a young boy hurtled out from a hallway hidden by an open door. He was in plaid-printed pajama pants and a white tank top. As soon as he saw me, he skidded to a stop on sock-clad feet.
“Whoa. Who are you?” He comes closer and looks closely at my chest. A look of realization dawns on him, and he exclaims, “You’re a girl!”
A crack a smile and say, “Yeah, I’m Autumn. Your mom hired me to babysit you.”
His mouth forms the biggest grin I had ever seen on such a little face. “Yay! What are we doing first, Autumn?” He then holds his hands in front of his crotch and bounces up and down.
“Well, maybe I should know your name first.”
“Oh. My name’s Nico. Wanna see my room?”
And before I know it, I’m being dragged down the hall to a room as big as my living room. It’s painted a rusty orange color, and has wooden king-mattress size bunk beds in the corner, which are covered by a blue plaid quilt. In one corner of the room, an Apple laptop sits on a desk, although I doubt Nico is even old enough to be assigned homework. a full-size basketball hoop is shoved in one corner of the room, complete with about ten feet of wooden flooring, instead of the plush navy carpet covering the rest of the room.
“Dang, boy! You have a nice room!”
He picks up one of the custom-made neon green basketballs with ‘Nico is beast’ on them in neon orange letters and shoots a perfect three-pointer.
“Thanks. My mom let me design it myself. And check this out!” He says, running over to an object covered with a sheet. He whips the sheet off, revealing a Simpson’s themed pinball game.
“Sweet!” I cry, running over to the awesome game. “Can I play it?”
“Yeah, If you wanna!”
I give him a hug and pull back the spring the releases the ball. When I let go, though, the ball doesn’t fly out in a flurry of lights and whistles as I’d been expecting. I turn to Nico and cock my head in a quizzical fashion.
“You gotta pay me. Duh.” He says, and looks at me like I’m the eight-year old.
“No way, bro. And, by the way, where’s,” I rack my brain for the name, “Mason?”
“Oh, I’ll show you.”
And then, for the second time today, I’m being dragged down the hallway of a gigantic mansion by and eight-year-old boy in plaid pajamas.
