VI
She loved the roses.
I couldn't remove the smile on my face when I saw how her eyes lit up at the sight of the flowers. And when she had hugged me, all my seconds thoughts disappeared.
I sat down on the sofa of their living room, looking around at the beautiful decor.
"My mom did everything," Bradley told me.
"Did you really?" I asked his mom. She waved her hand dismissively.
"It's nothing dear, I just put a few things together that's all."
As soon as she said that, there was a long stretch of silence. And although I enjoyed silence, this one was very uncomfortable. It felt almost as if there was a literal elephant in the room.
"Is something wrong mom?" Bradley finally broke the silence. She looked at me as if she was unsure before she looked back at her son.
"Your father, I think you should go and see him," she said. I looked over at Bradley and saw him nod his head rigidly.
"You can take Mia with you if you want." He nodded his head.
"Would you like to meet his father, dear?" she asked me. Unsure of how else to respond, I nodded my head before following him to a bedroom on the same floor.
He opened the door and we both entered. The first thing I noticed, even before I saw his father, were the countless tubes and machines which were connected to him. I watched as Bradley walked towards his father.
"Dad, it's me Bradley," he said. But there was no reply. He beckoned for me to walk closer and I did.
"This is Mia," he introduced me.
"It's very nice to meet you," I said. And I was surprised when the corner of his lips turned up into a smile. And although he didn't say anything, his smile spoke louder than any words would have.

That night, his mother convinced us to stay. I didn't know what she had said to him but suddenly Bradley didn't want to leave. And although I had not gone with an intention to sleep over, I couldn't get myself to leave either.
I was laying on the bed in a guest room when I heard a knock.
"Do you mind if I come in?" Bradley asked from the other side. Since I did not want to be rude to him in his own house, I allowed him to enter. He sat beside me on the bed, his head hanging low.
"Are you okay Bradley?" I asked. He shook his head.
"What wrong?" I tried to get more answers.
"It's my dad, he—he doesn't have long to live," his voice cracked as he said the last word. Hearing him like that broke my heart.
I stood up to turn on the light so that I could see him better but he held onto my arm to stop me.
"I was just going to turn in the light," I told him.
"Please don't," he said.
"Why?"
He didn't answer. But instead, he asked,
"Is it okay if I hold onto you?"
There was a moment of silence.
"Okay," I whispered.
He gently pulled me towards him, placing his head on my stomach before he wrapped an arm around my waist.
"What are you—"
And as soon as I heard his weeping, I couldn't find the strength to pull away. And instead, I allowed him to cry to his heart's content as I placed a comforting hand on his back.
