Jaxon POV:
As early morning awoke, I rose to wake up the two new additions to help me this morning. As I entered the room, an adorable sight greeted me.
The two pups had shifted in the night and now one brown pup and one black and white pup were curled around each other in the sheets, snuffling and whining slightly.

I silently squealed (because every gay shifter male should have the right to) before composing myself, picking up a pile of clothing and knocked on the door lightly while calling out.

"Pups! James, Jessie, time to get up now! We have a busy day until your Alphas come to pick you up."
The two shuffled a bit before lifting their heads and looking at me bleary eyed.

"Come on. Shift, get dressed and breakfast should be ready."
I left the pile of clothes and closed the door with a click and heading downstairs to start breakfast.

### (because I can't cook and too lazy to look it up)

The pups came down human and rubbing their eyes sleepily.
"Good morning pups. Here's your breakfasts. Your Alphas' should be coming by 8am. It's 6 now, so I was hoping you could help me today, as some of the wolves are to be released today."
Their eyes brighten and they bounced excitedly on their seats.
"You up for it?"

"Yes!" The pups squealed.

"Eat up and I'll see you at the door."

### another time skip, 30 minutes

The pups stood eagerly at the door, almost bouncing in their places. I grabbed a bucket of meat I had cut up earlier while waiting for the boys.

"Right. Let's go then. First, we have to go outside to the 'old wolves'. I cannot release these as they are too old to survive in the wild, but too wild to live in the house. They are friendly and you can stroke them, but let them go if they move away."

We left the house and stood in front of an enclosure about 30 feet from the back door where 18 elderly looking wolves were patiently sat at the door of the enclosure, waiting for food. We entered through the door and the wolves surrounded us, sniffing the two newcomers.

"Hello elders, get ready for deer meat today!" I shouted happily, which was returned with loud howls.
I handed a chunk to James.
"Just throw it and they catch it easily."

I then proceeded to give Jessie a piece and I smiled at the identical looks of enjoyment on the boys' faces.

One of the elderly females tugged at my shirt.
She and her mate have been here the longest, both at about 19, I'm suprized we haven't lost one yet.
I followed her further into the enclosure and realized I need to eat my words.

Her mate lay on his side, unmoving. Not even a whisp of breath.
My body went cold with dread as I knelt next to the body and stroked his side and sighed deeply.
"He was a good mate to you and you both had beautiful litters of strong puppies." I reached and patted her head gently.
She curled up next to him and whined softly, licking his muzzle to try and rouse him. I took my jacket off and lay it over her mates head, and she understood she had lost her love.
She threw her head back and let out one mournful howl, which echoed earily around the area. The other wolves realized they had lost one and sent howls back as condolences.
She huddled underneath the jacket next to her mate and slowed her breathing considerably before stopping altogether.
I stroked both their heads one last time.

"I'll be back later for you both. Enjoy your new lives up there, pain free and with each others love, know we miss you down here and we loved you for the time we knew you. Goodbye to you both." I rose and headed back to where James and Jessie were, huddled with the elderly, sobbing quietly into the wolves fur.

They looked up as I approached and ran to me, leaping into my arms and hiding their faces into each side of my neck.
"We felt her leave and these wolves felt it too. She was going to see her mate again, right?" James whispered.

"Yes, she was. But remember, her mate will be up there to meet her and she and her mate left with no pain. They are happily running above us like young wolves again,"
The two boys slowly stopped their sobbing and pulled away from me. I looked at the time.
"We've been here almost an hour and a half! You Alphas will be here soon. Let's get you ready to go!"

###

I handed each boy a little backpack filled with food and wolf plushies as reminders of their time here. All three of us stood at the porch with the wolves sniffing the ground.
We all turned to look as a truck pulled into the stone driveway. It was a shiny Nissan Titan in black.
The trick stopped and two men got out and the boys jumped in glee.

"ALPHAS!!" Jessie cried out, charging down the steps towards the two men. The man from the passenger side saw Jessie coming and rushed to meet him, scooping him up in a tight hug, head buried in neck.

Sadly, I was a little too far away to hear what he said to Jessie, but Jessie grinned at the man.
I looked down at James, who was still there, on edge to move, but unsure. I bent down next to him.

"Go and greet them. They have missed you."
James grinned and proceeded to hurtle down the steps towards the other man, leaping into his arms. I smiled at the pack reunion and looked around for my wolves.

My wolves looked around nervously, growling and whining.

Something is wrong.

I whistled sharply and walked down the steps, the wolves followed my whistle and sat just behind me, searching for danger.

Jessie and James had only been here not even a day, but they understood that there was danger, pushing their Alphas towards me while looking behind themselves.
As they neared, I saw shadows moving behind them, stalking the two boys who's backs were to them and a possessive feeling rushed through me.

"Get down!" I yelled, running towards them.
The two Alphas looked at me ad though I was crazy (maybe I am) but followed Jessie and James in a nick of time as I leaped over the four, all the while shifting into my feline, my young adult wolves following behind me in a pack hunting formation.

Time to protect our guests.
