Chapter One

One moment Josh was driving the two of us towards my house, away from the restaurant and the next a large truck sent the car spinning around and around off our path.

I felt myself flying through the open windshield and a few moments later my head slammed into the pavement of the road. I cried out in pain. I heard my Josh call my name loudly. “Chastity!”

Black spots colored my vision and my body felt heavy. “I knew I should have taken the seat belt thing more seriously…” I thought to myself. The darkness clawed at me, dragging me under against my will. I struggled against it to no avail.

My eyes opened and immediately burned from the brightness of the white room. “Ah Gosh!” I hissed covering my eyes with my hand. “Why the hell is it so bright?”

“Sorry,” said a male voice. “You can open your eyes now.”

I cautiously opened my eyes and the room was now much dimmer. I sat up swiftly and took in my surroundings. That took no time at all considering I was only on the floor of a large empty white room with a single red door opposite of me. I looked to my left and there stood a tall dark haired stranger. He looked around my age and his eyes were an odd grayish purple color. They were trailing over me while his lips were in a slight smirk. “Welcome. It’s about time you woke up.”

“Where the hell am I?” I asked, wrapping my arms around me knees.

The guy offered me a hand, which I took after a moment. He hauled me to my feet. “I’m Christian, so nice to finally meet you Chastity.”

“You too…” I said, confusion dipping into my voice.

His smirk grew, amusement coloring his features—his lovely eyes. “It’s alright, Chastity, I know you don’t have a clue who I am. You can figure that out later. Right now we’ve got to get you back.”

“Back where?” I asked.

“Back to the real world,” he shrugged.

“What?” This was ridiculous. This guy was insane.

“You don’t know where you are, Chastity?” he asked.

“If I knew would I have asked you?” I asked crossing my arms.

“Good point,” he nodded. He stepped away and held out his arms. “You’re in your mind.”

“Huh?” I asked dumbly.

He let out a strangled laugh. “Let’s see...” he put a finger to his chin and thought for a moment. “You remember getting in a car accident right?” At my nod he continued. “Well right now your physical form is in the hospital—you’re in a coma while the spiritual you—you right now—is right here in your mind. Sometimes when people go under like this they are forced to go through their mind—being led by someone like me. I am a random person picked from a random point in your memories. You’ve seen me before, I know that. I can’t tell you how—that is for you to figure out.”

“So are you…you or are you just a figment of my imagination?” I asked.

“I’m me. You have no control over my actions or whatever happens. I’ve been here for hours waiting for you. It took you such a long time to wake up I was beginning to think you’d either die or return to your body.”

“Can I return to my body now?” I asked.

“No…the only time for you to return would be between being knocked out in the physical world and dying,” he answered.

“So…I’m stuck here?” I clarified.

“Exactly,” Christian nodded.

I put a hand to my aching head. “This is insane. How the hell do I get back then—exactly?”

He smiled. “You will have to walk through your mind. There is a door, at the end of this maze. That is the way out. And before you ask, no I cannot just snap my fingers and ‘poof’ us there. You will have to walk, I’m afraid.”

“How the hell am I supposed to find my way there alone?” I grumbled.

“Who said you would be alone?” Christian asked with a smirk. “I thought we went through this—weren’t you listening?—I will be guiding you to said door.” He walked to the red door and pushed it open. All that was there was a pitch black room of nothing. “Ladies first,” he smiled.

“There’s nothing in there,” I told him.

He held up a finger. “There’s nothing in there yet.”

I narrowed my eyes at him but walked through the door. The only light in the room was coming from the open red door—which Christian closed as he stepped through.

There was suddenly a light…a projection. The room changed, it was suddenly a movie theater. The projection was hitting the large wall to my left. In the middle of the empty theater sat me and Josh—a year ago on our first date.

“This is…”

“Your mind is not in any exact order, everything is rather jumbled,” Christian said putting a hand on my shoulder.

“Oh…”

“This movie sucks,” memory Josh said, his head tipping to the other me.

“It really does. Do you want to leave?” I mouthed the words along with past me.

Josh gently tipped up my chin. “Not leave…just turn my attention elsewhere.” And with that he touched our lips together. It was my first kiss. He was my first boyfriend. He’d been my friend for years and then our other friends pushed us into dating. It was a wonderful decision.

“Do you want to move on?” Christian asked; his mouth at my ear.

I nodded and allowed him to tug me to the far door. The next room was dark again. But there was a scent I recognized—unfortunately.
