Persephone was considered one of the most beautiful of the gods, and was the crown jewel of the Underworld.
Naturally, many heroes and gods believed that Hades was not deserving of her beauty. One of these heroes was Theseus.
But he was the only that dared to act against Hades.
He snuck into the Underworld with the intention of abducting Persephone for himself.
He and a friend attempted the deed, and while they walked, searching for an easy way into the palace, Theseus sat upon a rock to rest.
After a while, he attempted to stand, and found his entire body immobile. The friend who had come with him cried out suddenly, and Theseus turned to see what was wrong.
Pirithous, his companion, was surrounded by the furies, and carried off.
Theseus was left in his stone, and there he waited, punished for his transgressions, up until Heracles showed up and released him.
But Hades did not forget the crime.
