Abigail made preparations for everyone to set the party up. They prepared the food, set the house up for guest to sit. The Missus had all of them dress presentable. They had all wore Black dresses with White underlining. They were to be less noticeable but still presentable. They held so many parties during the summers that they knew what to expect. There was almost always a group of people Janae had never seen before.
All the guest who were not family or close friends waited in the main room for their hosts. The boys' mother and father came put
Janae became used to their parties since they held so many during the summer. She enjoyed looking at the nice expensive dresses the women wore. There were so many people at the party that she had never seen before.
Master Joseph and Miss Elizabeth came down the stairs with their arms intertwined. "Welcome to our household. We are very glad to have you all here tonight." Master Joseph smiled looking at Miss Elizabeth.
Nicholas and Charles came out in handsome tuxedos. You could tell who their parents were for they had their father's charm and their mother's elegance.
Charles' deep blue tuxedo matched his eyes. His dark Blonde hair shined and he was very charming.
Nicholas wore a basic black and white tuxedo which brung attention to his face. He had the same Blue eyes as Charles but only Nicholas had Brown almost curly hair.Sarah practically ran beside Charles putting her arm in his.
She was a snobby girl but loved by the boys her age. She was also good at getting people to fall for her.Nicholas walked by Janae. "You look nice Janae" he smiled. "Thank you master Nicholas." She had to address him in respectful terms in a public setting like these. It wasn't what Nicholas wanted her to say but it kept the missus happy.
Nicholas waited till Janae was down the hall by herself, grabbed the empty tray from her, and set it on a table. "Come with me. I'd like you to meet the people worth speaking to here."
He put his arm around her waist as if her place was to walk beside him and not behind him. She didn't mind nor notice it.He took her to where guest were listening to someone volunteer to show their pianist skills. They went over to a young man around his early 20's (almost the same age as Charles) who had been tall and what looked like to be a people's man. He had people listening to him talk and they would laugh at the boisterous jokes he made. His hair was a strawberry blonde and cut short. He had freckles you couldn't see unless he wasn't smiling. To Janae he had looked somewhat familiar.
"This is George Manson, you've probably seen him before at previous parties." He whispered to her.
"Good evening Nick! And...I'm sorry and your name is?" George spoke with a strong British accent. He bent down slightly to hear her response.
"Janae." She replied.
"Ahh Janae. Nice to meet you! You speak so soft like a....Like a bird in the morning!" George smiled. "Unless you reside where Mr. Thomas resides then that isn't such a compliment anymore." George laughed causing the others to laugh. "Its true!" Mr. Thomas shrugged. He took his hat off, revealing his shiny balding head."Remind me I have documents for you waiting back at my estate." He whispered to Nicholas. Nicholas nodded and George carried on telling his jokes and stories.
Nicholas and Janae walked away soon after. "Wanna know a secret about him?" He whispered. She nodded. "He has a son with one of his slaves who stay in the house, but he's newly married." Janae gasped. "Does his wife know?"
"Of course, everyone knows. Why else would a colored slave have a mulatto child? It's actually stunning that he'll claim the child as his and cares for the slave and the baby very much. Most men wouldn't. His wife isn't too happy about it but for some reason she deals with it. No one in this town or possibly in the state would question a man like him over his personal life. He's a good business partner."
