The other side. They say when one dies his spirit leaves his body to the other side. They say there is a bright light on the other side such transports you into a world of everlasting peace. As the bright light shone in my eye, I could not help but think that I was on the other side. That I was being transported to a world of everlasting peace. I reached out to touch the light, that's when I heard the voice. Ah the voice of God himself.
'He's awake.'
'Yes Lord, I'm awake. I'm here Lord. Take my soul.'
'He's moving his hands.'
'Yes Lord, I lift my hands to you.'
'Call the doctor.'
'Yes Lord the doctor. Wait what doctor?' I opened my eyes and my senses were aroused to the world around me.
I was in a small white painted room. A brown coloured mini ceiling fan rotated above my head. I was on a bed, it felt hard as a rock and smelled like hospital medication but it was a bed. Beside me was another bed with a young man sitting on it. He had a bandage wrapped around his chest and he was looking right at me.
'I told you we shouldn't go out.' he said smiling at me. 'Look what happened now.'
It was Wole, and beside him was Father Patrick and Mr Charles who were standing next to uncle Gilbert.
'Where am I?'
'You're in a hospital, son.' said Father smiling.
'You'll be alright.' said uncle Gilbert.
'Where's Chidimma?' I struggled to get up.
'You should rest Alex.' said detective Charles.
'But... '
The doctor walked in.
'Ah boy your are awake.' he touched my neck and asked me how I was feeling.
'I feel hungry.'
'That's normal.' he smiled. 'You are fine. We had to remove a bullet from your lower abdomen, but you'll be fine.'
I bent to look at my stomach but he just told me to relax.
'You should all excuse him so he can rest.'
'Yes Doctor. We'll soon be going.' said Uncle Gilbert.
'Okay, i'll be in my office if you need me.' he nodded. 'Father, detective.' he said and walked away.
After he was gone they all turned their attention to me.
'Alex, you're very lucky to be alive.' said Mr Charles. 'We had a breakthrough with the interrogations when one of the suspects finally confessed the name of their leader of operations. By the time we got there they were ready for us. After a heavy gunfight we finally captured them and when we got to the study we found you lying next to an unconscious Mr Banjo.'
'He's not dead?' I asked.
'No he's not. But thanks to the confession you recorded on that tape recorder, in line with other eye witnesses he'll be put behind bars for the entirety of his worthless life.'
I smiled.
'So why is Chidimma not here? We have to celebrate together.'
There was a deadening silence in the room. It felt awkward.
'She's gone son.' said Father Patrick.
'Gone? Her mother came for her already?' I sighed. 'Why would she leave without saying good bye?'
