When she was younger, Jessa always thought that John would live forever. She thought he'd be there for every moment, the good and the bad. She knew it wasn't his fault that he was gone, and she also knew what really happened the night he died. She kept her mouth shut for all these years for a couple reasons. One: she was keeping it a secret for her brother's sake and two: she was terrified of what Clay would do if he knew she knew the truth. Lord knows, Clay Morrow is not above killing his own step daughter in order to keep his deep, dark secrets.
Jessa missed her father like crazy. When he first died, she cried, and cried, and cried. She refused to believe that he was gone. In her head, he was just off somewhere doing something for the club. Obviously she knew that he wasn't going to come back, but sometimes it was nice to pretend. She had the best father any girl could ask for, and just like that, with the snap of Clay's fingers, he was gone.
Inside their house, Jessa had a photograph of her sitting on the back of John's bike when she was no older than five. Six year old Jax was standing to the side with John, and Gemma had taken the photo. Happy liked to look at that photo a lot. He liked seeing how happy and full of life both Jessa and Jax were when they were kids. Now, neither of them would admit it, but they each have a resembling bitterness about them, and Happy just assumed that it stemmed from the fact that they lost their father and their mother remarried soon after. Happy would never judge Jessa for despising Clay and Gemma, even though Clay was his President. Happy thought Jax would make a better President than Clay, but he would never dare say that out loud.
Jessa had been through so much in her 28 years of life. She grew up the daughter of the founder of a motorcycle club, her father was killed when she was barely a teen, by the time she was eighteen she despised her mother and step father so much she snuck away to Las Vegas with a guy who ended up raping her, then at nineteen she ran away to live in Oregon and married a psychotic woman beater. Now at 28 she's with a man who's nicknamed "The Killa", who gets a smiley face tattoo for every person he kills, and now she has a son out of wedlock.
And she could truly say that this was the happiest she's ever been in her entire life.
Jessa Danielle Teller was the strongest person Happy had ever met. She was the only woman in the entire world who'd managed to capture his heart and tame his wild behavior. Well, sort of.
Before Jessa came along and messed up his entire life, Happy was just going through the motions, fucking a different croweater every night and throwing himself into club shit. Before Jessa he really didn't care whether he lived or died; whether or not he made it home after making a run for the club. Now he had a reason to come home every night. He had a gorgeous girlfriend and a beautiful son to come home to. He had a family. Sure, the club was his family, but the only people Happy was truly living for were Jessa, Daxton and his mother.
Happy wanted to protect Jessa and Daxton from everything. After learning about Jessa's past and everything that she'd gone through in her life, he wanted to shield her from everything. Unfortunately, if he wanted to protect her from literally everything, he would have to end their relationship. Because of his ties to the Sons of Anarchy, that made him a target. Which in turn made Jessa and Daxton targets as well. But what he told himself was that Jessa was a target whether she was with him or not. She's John Teller's daughter. She's Jax Teller's sister.
In the end, there is only two people Happy felt he truly had to protect Jessa from.
The first was herself.
And the second?
Her step father.
