Big Surprises

Liam and I haven’t really seen each other for the past couple weeks. It’s been so stressful taking care of everything at home mostly by myself and on top of it I haven’t felt well. I’ve been in and out of bathroom puking for the past three days. I text Liam to ask him to buy me some tums.

“Are you not feeling good, babe L”-Liam

Was his response. I type back fast telling him that I don’t and to hurry. I close my eyes as I continue to feel nausea. What the hell is wrong with me? I felt fine an hour ago.

About ten minutes later he was walking in the door with a grocery bag. Damn he listened when I said to hurry.

“What’s the matter babe?” he asks as he crouches down next to me as I lie on the couch.

I shrug. “I don’t know, I just don’t feel good.” I whine.

He lays the back of his hand on my forehead. “Well you aren’t running a fever.” He lets me know.

I shrug again. “I still feel like shit.” I tell him.

He sighs. “I’m sorry honey, let me take you to bed.” He suggests.

I nod. Liam wraps his arms around me and carries me off to our bedroom. I fall asleep almost instantly.

1 Week Later

I jump out of bed and run into the bathroom barely making it to the toilet. My stomach heaves and I throw up bile inside. All that’s coming out is stomach acid. I haven’t been able to keep anything down for the past week and a half.

Liam comes in the bathroom as well. I keep my head close to the bowl. “Get out of here. You don’t want to see this.” I tell him.

“Abi, I’ve had it you are going to the doctor, right now.” He demands.

I groan. “Liam, I don’t need to go to the doctor. It’s just a bug.” I lie. I honestly have no idea what’s wrong with me. I have some kind of idea but I’m too scared to find out and I refuse to think of it as a possibility.

I can hear him stomp his foot. That’s how I know he’s mad, he throws a fit like a little kind. “You’ve said that for the past week yet you’re still sick. Come on, let’s go.” He said.

An hour later Liam has me signed into the emergency room at our nearby hospital. Liam holds a puke bag for me but it’s unnecessary. I feel absolutely fine. Hungry and tired but fine.

“Liam can’t we just go home? I’m feeling better.” I plea looking over at him.

He shakes his head. “No, not until you see the doctor.” He tells me.

I groan. I’m really tired of sitting here. How long is this going to take? I didn’t want to be here all night.

I find out the answer twenty minutes later when the nurse calls my name. “Abigail.” She says.

I get up to go to her office with Liam on my heels. After she asks most of the basics she asks, “So what’s wrong?”

I pat my belly. “I just haven’t felt good for almost two weeks. I haven’t been able to keep any food down. I’m starting to feel a little better now though.” I tell her.

She nods and types into her computer. “When was your last menstrual cycle?” she asks.

I look over at Liam and then back at the nurse. “6 weeks ago.” I say.

She nods and wags her finger at me. “That could be your problem. Are you sexually active?” She asks as she grabs her clipboard standing up.

I blush. “Yes.” I answer.

She goes over to the back door and opens it. “I think I know what your problem is, follow me.” She instructs.

My heart drops and I start to sweat. She isn’t talking about what I think she is, is she? Liam holds my hand as we follow her to a patient’s room.

She goes to the cabinet and hands me a pee cup. “Fill this and bring it back. I’ll have the label done by then.” She tells me.

“I’ll be back.” I whisper to Liam who’s been completely silent since we came in the back.

I wonder what’s going on in his mind. The nurse is talking about a possible pregnancy. What if I am pregnant? What are Liam and I going to do with a baby?

I go to the bathroom across the hall my hands shaking. It takes me almost two minutes to get the damn cap off. I hurry up and pee before washing my hands.

The nurse is outside the bathroom waiting for me. She smiles as I hand over my pee like it’s the best present in the world.

She places the label on it and sets it down on a tray. “You can go wait with your husband, I’ll be right back.” She says.

I take a deep breath as I go back to the room. Liam is still standing in the same spot with the same dumbfounded look on his face.

I hurry over to him. “Liam are you okay?” I ask ushering him to sit down.

He nods. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He says.

I sit closely to him holding his hand. I’m anxious for the doctor to get back. My hands are shaking, I don’t want to be pregnant. That is seriously the last thing we need right now.

The nurse and now a doctor come in. I cross my fingers. Let it be cancer, let it be anything else but pregnancy, I pray.

The doctor smiles at us. “Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Payne, you are expecting.”

My stomach starts to heave. “I think I’m going to be sick.” I say moments before puking on the floor.
