Autumn

I stood in line waiting for my world to change. There were many occurrences as this one in the city; opportunities for an actress to land her big break. Yet, a year had gone by and I hadn't even managed to get my foot in the door. So many doors had been slammed in my face, literally. Sometimes I questioned my ability. Why hadn't someone discovered my talent? Had I overestimated myself all these years?

"No!" Will affirmed when I uttered my fears out loud. "Don't you see how incredible an actress you are? It's absolutely fascinating to watch you perform. Don't be silly, Stargirl."

So I continued to wait along with the rest of actors lined up since early morning watching others who were lucky enough to have an actual appointment for an audition walk right inside the building. By noon, a man in a black turtleneck stepped out announcing auditions were over for the day, and we weren't going to be seen. Cackling thunder boomed as the man shut the door and re-entered the building. The sky had become dark blocking the sun and turning midday into late afternoon. It soon began to rain, millions of dark cold water droplets seeping through my clothes and soaking me whole in a minute. I sat on the top stone step of the building. The people who'd been waiting by me had scattered discouraged and looking for shelter from the storm. I was the only one left. I stared at my old leather boots, still hopeful for some reason.

I knocked on the door, three confident knocks.

The same man peeked his head out.

"Yes, Miss?" He asked.

"I'm here for the 'Looking for Alaska' auditions." I replied with a confident smile despite being drenched to the bone.

"They're over." He said impatient.

"I know I'm late it's just I was stuck in traffic for hours, and had ditch my cab and walk here. I got lost and it started to rain..." I bluffed.

"Ohh right. You're Marilyn's kid. She called saying you might not be able to make it. Come in." He opened the door.

I stepped inside quietly.

He led me inside a white room. Four people sat in front of a dark mahogany table. All of them were occupied on their phones or papers on the table. Only one of them looked up from his notes. He looked out of place next to the others in his thin wire rimmed glasses and messy hair.

"You can begin." Ordered the man who'd let me in. He pressed play on the camera. That was it? Just do it? No instructions? No script or monologue they specifically wanted me to perform? No. They probably did give Marilyn's kid whatever she had to prepare for...

Someone coughed. They were all staring at me now, dark bored gazes. Nerd glasses smiled at me encouragingly.

But maybe Marilyn's kid didn't care for preparation. She lived in the moment, she was spontaneous. Like the character she was auditioning for, the unforgettable Alaska Young. I had read 'Looking for Alaska' three times before. And I had memorized some of my favorite passages. If I had made it inside this room...I could do this. Marilyn was counting on me, whoever she was.

"My name is Autumn. I'm 19 and I'm auditioning for the role of the infamous Alaska Young." I paused closing my eyes and breathing in deep. When I opened my eyes again, all my fears were gone; I was someone else.
