Part 1 Autumnal Equinox
Autumn
"Once upon a time in a kingdom not so far away there lived a princess who was the fairest in the land. Her lips were cherry red, and her hair was long and black as night. She was good and pure like snow. The kingdom praised her, and loved her dearly. She loved everyone. But she could never shake off the feeling that there was something missing in her fairytale. There was more to life than balls and fancy dinners always with the same mindless chatter and pretentious people. She felt trapped with no escape. She craved for adventure and prayed. Adventure came to her the summer of her 18th birthday in an unlikely way. It came in the shape of a dark boy who had blue eyes deeper than the ocean. He had been hired to work for the summer in the palace. He seemed rude, and savage...the princess stuck up her nose and looked the other way whenever he passed by. He cursed under his breath every time the princess danced on by. She was such a spoiled brat, feeling sorry for herself when she had everything. Not that he wanted any of her riches. He wanted to travel the world, and earn the day's bread...not live the empty lives the royals led. They both seemed so different...night and day, fire and ice. But that summer they burned brighter than fireworks in the sky. They fell in love, a great love as everlasting as Romeo and Juliet's, and strong as Paris' love for Helen of Troy. But the king and queen would never approve of the pair. The princess was to marry a prince, not a pauper! The lovers didn't care. The fair princess climbed down her balcony every night jumping into the arms of the poor boy. To her, he was the richest person she'd ever met. He had wild dreams, and she knew that he'd make them all come true. She could only hope to join him in all of his adventures, so his adventures would be hers also. He dreamed of her every day while he worked under the scorching sun, and fell asleep admiring her dazzling face as he held her in his arms at night under silver moonlight. Still, their careless free nights were not left unnoticed by the kingdom. The king and queen locked the princess away in ivy tower, and vanished the pauper from the palace by the sea. In spite of all, the boy came back for the girl at midnight. They ran away barefoot, laughing and kissing through the night. The next day they were married. The princess was disowned by the royals, and shunned. Yet, she'd never felt more free. She and he could go anywhere and be happy together; the world was theirs. While they had been falling deeper in love, the kingdom had fallen into war. All young men were being drafted, and the pauper was no exception. He was forced into battle making the former princess promise she would live out their dreams if anything were to happen to him. With tears in her eyes, she promised him and they kissed goodbye for the last time. He fell during combat leaving a young widow with child. He had gone in the winter, and died in the spring, a new summer came and went. When the leaves began to turn into ravishing scarlet shades and fell creating rich carpets on the ground a beautiful, healthy baby girl was born. She had blue eyes, and dark hair like both her parents. She was fair like her mother. But, the sparkle in her eyes could only be her father's. This babe was a new beginning for the ruined princess. She would keep her promise, and live out every dream her husband and her had ever dreamed. They would all come true in their little girl. She named the child Autumn because she was born on the day night and day become the same, when the seasons change, and new chapters commence..."
I paused, noticing Arya had fallen asleep next to me. Her dark lashes rested on her cheeks adorably. I smiled down at the 4-year-old I loved babysitting every weekend instead of going out partying like most people my age. I was grateful I never had to finish this story, something always stopped me, either Arya fell asleep or Katherine (Arya's mom, my boss, and neighbor) came discharging me from my babysitting duties. I wouldn't really know how to finish the fairytale, it needs a happy ending...and I'm afraid I'll never make it good enough. But, then again, it never was a fairytale, it was a tragedy. Like Shakespeare's plays with tragic heroes. The princess and the pauper; my mom and dad, they were both destined for downfall. And me. Well, I'm no dark hero, or fair princess. I'm not the protagonist of a star-crossed lovers' tale. I plan to be...in movie scenes. But, not in real life. Because great love stories are only meant for books and movie screens. All loves end in heartbreak no matter how true they are. People change, people leave, people die. And all that's left is shattered glass. So I won't fall in love because everything that falls gets broken.
I only intend on rising.
