I was pleased when my grandmother showed her face at being summoned ; at least I hadn't disappointed Loki by any clumsiness in my necromancy talents. Once I had given Wendy the power to be visible and audible to her husband, Loki Staad's face crumpled into such a miserably hopeful and brokenly happy look, I was only obliged to give the couple their own time.
Despite what Loki Staad might have said about his wife now immortally residing in his heart, actually seeing her after so many years of her death and hearing her voice must have emotionally broken all the parts of him that he had so effortfully put together over the years.
I almost felt guilty at that.

I came across Eleanor in one of the palace hallways, a day before my debutante ball, and in those brief seconds of our eye contact, I was torn about what to say. Hi. How have you been? Did you like the kiss? In case you didn't, I'm wholeheartedly sorry.
Yes, this was my only chance to apologise. I opened my mouth to speak, but before I could even utter a word, Eleanor pulled me by my arm to the nearest random room - which turned out to be a storeroom sort of a place, with cobweb-kissed paintings, torn tapestries, boxes, cardboard cartons and only a tiny window on one of the walls.
"Hey." I tried being cheerful, but Eleanor barely noticed.
"I'm sorry I overreacted about what you did yesterday, but maybe you too should get this clear. You are of a royal lineage. You have Trylle, Vittra, Skojare - and God forbid so much more - special blood in you. You are meant to be protected and preserved for the best. A tracker and a prince are not supposed to be romantically involved at any costs; you should get that. Your great-great grandmother Elora Dahl once banished a marksinna because she had a child with a mankslig.
"We might be beyond those rules about childbirth - seeing that your very own father has gotten laid by a woman whom he doesn't know or remember. But these few rules about the hierarchy remain unchanged over the years. You are a prince - and a very special one. And I am just a tracker. We cannot be together at any costs, and you dare not be having any misconceptions about this simple matter. These are linear rules that are once bended, considered to be broken. And the consequences are severe."
"Hey, chill up Eleanor. It was . . .just a kiss."
"Just a kiss? Well, I do hope it was just a kiss, Jasper, and that you are not harbouring any sort of feelings for me. Because if you do, you better not even think about it." Her glare was so intimidating, I wanted to shrink into the floor.
Thankfully I wasn't part Kanin, because if I had been, by now I would have turned red all over from blushing. For aside from the flimsy topic of discussion, I did harbour feelings for Eleanor undeniably.
"'Kay, it was 'just a kiss'. Are we good now?"
"I think so." Eleanor replied, and I cocked an eyebrow. "Alright. We are good." She corrected herself with a smile.
