“From childhood's hour I have not been. As others were, I have not seen. As others saw, I could not awaken. My heart to joy at the same tone. And all I loved, I loved alone.”
― Edgar Allan Poe
Chapter 1 Boredom
In the darkness, David watched the scene below, it changes but stays the same. From this distance they looked like bugs, running around. Why do they bother moving around in their insignificant lives. Poof, It would take very little for them to die. A car accident, a plane crash, a train wreck, a brick falling on top of their soft skulls. Any thing could kill and end their dreams, hopes, aspirations, pain and misery.
He felt tired of everything. It was sad to say, but nothing moved him. Nothing inspired him. There was literally nothing new to awaken any feelings in him. The only time he felt any emotion was thinking about his dead wife and child. But in those memories was only self loathing.
David had lived in many places. Different continents, countries, states, provinces, cities, towns, and villages. He had lived under many different governments, lived many lives, read and studied many things. He knew many things, but didn't care about anything. Not anymore.
He looked down from his spot on the sky scraper. He could jump, surely that would kill him, a good splat on the pavement. Then an end to the nothingness.
Only thing keeping him here was his sire. His promise to replace himself with someone new, if decided he no longer wanted this life.
But how could he damn some one else to the hell he lived in? Never ending hell of loneliness and emptiness.
If David could have died of boredom, he would have been dead a long time ago.
That was it, boredom was his enemy.
David decided immortality was not worth the price he had paid. He sold his soul to the Devil for revenge.
To entertain himself, he decided to visit his old haunts. This was his city. The place he had lived, married, buried his wife and child.
David found the place he grew up, but the old building was gone. Disappointment filed his thoughts, this would not do. In it's place was a modern apartment building. He sat perched on the edge of the roof, deciding on his next move.
Daddy, I don't feel good." She's lying in the narrow bed, looking so frail and her cold, slight frame huddled under the thread bare grey blanket.
"Where does it hurt, baby?" What kind of father was he? My head between my hands, I could not even afford medicine. I was not able to properly feed and clothe my child.
"My tummy, please make it stop." Her little baby face in pain.
"I will kiss your tummy. Elizabeth's tummy, daddy says stop hurting my baby."
"oh, daddy, it listened. It stopped." But I knew it didn't really stop. I watched her life ebb away. She didn't deserve this pain, so innocent. Why didn't god give this to someone who deserved it. Not my baby.
"Baby, sleep. I'll be right here when you wake up.
I buried my baby girl, right beside her mother. Now there were two grave stones for me to visit.
All because the owner of the factory I worked for would not pay me enough to feed my family. I watched as they slowly starved.
My pregnant wife, Gemma was to weak to survive childbirth. Now my baby Elizabeth. I couldn't afford the medicine to save her. The supervisor of the factory refused to give me a loan against my pay, so i could buy Elizabeth's medicine.
My world came crashing down when my baby girl died. I believed I had nothing left to lose. I prayed for vengeance. Be careful what you pray for. I didn't realize I had still one thing of value left to lose. The answer to my prayer cost me my soul.
Gemma and Elizabeth, I love you both, my loves. Through my tears I am baptized. Fire burning my flesh, purifying my soul. - David
He was so consumed with his dark thoughts, he didn't hear the roof top door opening.
