I squealed as the marching band marched down to the field. I love marching band with all my heart. I then see my little Skylar march with her tenor saxophone. A girl named Braden made fun of me because I loved watching it.
After the band finished their halftime show they went back to the high school. I ran down the bleachers until I finally reached Skylar. Skylar was walking with Devin, they were talking about how the band did tonight and what they needed to work on. I stopped before I reached them. They were cute together, they were both weird and awkward so they just kind of clicked.
I decided to wait by the gate of the football field until Sky came back. I saw Skylar's father Clay walking towards the gate too, his nose in a book.
"Hi, Clay." I said making hand guns. After that I mentally punch my face. What the heck Gabby?
"Hello Gabby." He laughed. I waited with Skylar's father for what felt like hours.
"What is taking her so long?" He asks looking down at his watch that rested on his wrest. I pull out my iPhone checking the time.
"I'll call her." I say walking closer to the sidewalk that lead back to the high school. I pressed the call button and waited a couple seconds. No answer.
So like any reasonable person I called the next best thing. Devin.
"Hello?" Devin said.
"Where is my Skyler?" I say frowning even though he couldn't see my face.
"She's getting her stuff. We had to unload the band stuff." He says casually.
"Well tell her she needs to hurry her butt up." I say looking at the band people who were passing me. None of them were Sky.
"Okay, I will, bye." He says.
"Thank you, bye." I say hanging up. I then started walking back to Skylar's father.
Homecoming is finally here. Today was the parade, I didn't do much, I went with a group of friends and ate at Shae's dad's work(Shae is one of my friends) that's by the square. Soon a bunch of the girls will leave for marching band. Ugh I want to join band so bad. The parade was nice to watch. Homecoming in my town was technically a holiday, we get out of school at 11:30 and the parade at 1:00.
After a while of waiting I finally see Skylar walk with a group of friends back to the entrance of the field. I ran to her and wrapped my arms around her.
"You guys were amazing!" I say excited to see everyone. Jane, Deana, Ally, and Lillie were all walking together.
I looked at Sky.
"Are you ready to meet Devin's parents?" I say reminding her.
"Yeah." She says with a little bit of worry in her voice. Obviously I was meeting Devin's parents too, I mean I'm Skylar's best friend. Skylar and I walked over to her father and we waited for her mother to come.
"Is Devin getting his parents?" I say looking up at the night sky.
"He should be." Sky says. She then perks up when she sees Devin walking over with two older people and a little girl.
Skylar's parents introduced themselves to Devin's parents who did the same. I stood there listening to them talk about homecoming and where they might go to eat and how they were going to get there.
After a while of talking to each other the game ended and the fireworks were about to start. Devin turns and asks Skylar if she wants to go to his truck and watch them from there. To my surprise Sky turns to me and looks back at Devin.
"Can Gabby come too?" She asked. Devin's smiled and nodded. I started to panic because Devin was a junior and we were freshman. My parents would kill me if they found out.
Sky told me everything would be okay. We started walking to the end of the football field where Devin's white truck was. A boy with shaggy hair came up to Devin.
"This is Nick." Devin explained. "I'm giving him a ride home."
We smiled and then Devin said he was gonna pull his car up closer so we could see the fireworks better. Nick and Devin went inside the truck and started the engine.
"I don't want you to go to dinner with Devin without me." I say turning to Sky.
"Gabby, it will be okay. I promise, you'll have fun with your friends." She says holding my hands. Devin pulled his truck closer to the fence of the football field, then him and Nick got out.
Devin and Nick got right in the back of his truck and sat down, then sky went and sat by them. I stopped and stared at all of them. Well if you didn't realize this yet I was the freaking queen of awkward so I panicked until Skylar finally said.
"Just get up here Gabby!" I finally did and we sat back and watched the beautiful display of fireworks shoot up into the sky. Each time one exploded into sparks of color, Devin would gasp in wow. After all the ooh's and ahh's the fireworks were finished.
"Do you guys need a ride home?" Devin said. I shook my head at Skylar, she knew my parents would kill me if I got a ride from a high schooler.
"Gabby isn't aloud to get rides from upper class man." Sky said bluntly.
"Ohh." Devin said he then hugged Sky and him and Nick waved goodbye.
"I'm sorry." I said to Sky. She sighed.
"It's fine" she says as we cross the street.
"Hey? What if Nick and I went to homecoming together? Then would I be able to come with you to dinner?" I say smiling.
"Gabby no." She says laughing.
Besides, I barely knew Nick.
