Present day September 2015

The crisp autumn weather was well under way. The leaves on the bushes and trees, where off various shades of colour ready to drop from the next big gust of wind or down pour.

Unbeknown to the two rafters coming down river in the dingy, the river had changed due to the rock slide earlier in the week the new hidden unseen dangers await. As the current picked up as they went around the corner. Meeting with the fearsome roar of crushing water suddenly become loud.

“Pull left” shouted Glen, trying to be heard above the din.

“Am trying” yelled back Anna.

Glen grabbed his day sack before it went into the water as the first major bounce throwing Anna off as she tried to start the motor. The dingy was in the hands of the gods as Glen held on. Unable to see or hear Anna as the water fall come up.

Water everywhere the dingy didn’t take the fall to well was it clasped on top of Glen, in the water. Some items had broken loose as the dingy sprung upwards. Moving out of the main current he spotted Anna she wasn’t moving.

“Anna” called Glen

Stepping out of the water he put his day sack on the ground. He could see her better now. Her lower body was in the water the current didn’t want to let her go trying to move her back into the water.

“Anna” This time Glen shouted.

Still no reaction from Anna. Glen picked up his place as he moved towards her with more urgency.

(Fuck.) Glen looked to see if it was only a head injury, before checking her body for any other deformities. Neck and back seemed ok, arm and shoulder need to see that better he was telling himself. Breathing normal, Casualty drills started kicking it was like second nature.

(Lucky your out.) As he pulled her up to carry in a drag position. Moving backwards towards shore area, and trying not to trip over. Anna was starting to gain conciseness. Glen kicked some of the sharper stones out of the way. He put her down. The wound to the head was becoming his first concern to stop the bleeding.

Her eyes started to opening to flicked open.

“Hay you” Glen bent over to her level.

Annas facewas  contorted in pain. “Ow, ow” her right arm was starting to swell using her left to move over her shoulder, that is when she released she was bleeding from the head.

“Glen am I dying” worry was creeping in to her voice.

“Cut that crap out. It’s not as bad as it looks.” Glen tone was harsh.

She could she the worry on his face, or was it old memories. Then the realisation her side hurts more then the cut to the head. Where, she had tried to protect her face from the rocks as she recalled the fall from above.

“I guess, your helmet had taken the main impact and the swelling not that bad and you don’t have white clear fluid coming out from your ears. Unless you tell your parents am a wife beater.” His voice become claim.

“You’re not a doctor, and don’t treat me like one of your soldiers.” Anna snapped back.

“True, but I’ve seen enough wounds and injuries to know about shock and delayed concussion.” Moving to his day sack, Glen started pulling items out.

“I’ve got a confession to make.” Her tone was serious

“You got your mobile phone wrapped up still in plastic.” Glen was trying to change the tone in his voice making it jollier.
