Author's Note: Chapter One continued
"Sorry, I was--I was just thinking," I said, apologetically.
"Did you hear anything I just said?" she inquired, her eyebrows furrowed.
I stared at her guiltily and shrugged my shoulders.
"I was just saying we need to find dates for Homecoming. ASAP," she said, eyeing out hot guys across the cafeteria. "I was thinking about asking Damian, but he's MIA like 24/7 so Trevor Lowe is on the top of my list," Kiera said, staring at him two tables over, while he was laughing with his other jock friends.
"Right. Well, I'll get started on that. Look, guys, I'm going to head early to sixth period. I need to talk to Mr. Rockwell before class," I said, making an excuse, as I started to stand up and grab my bags.
"Alright, we'll see you after school. Same meeting spot?" Jillian asked.
"Yeah, see you there," I said, smiling.
When I reached Mr. Rockwell's room, he wasn't inside. He must've been at lunch still. I sat down on the ground with my back against the wall.
"Hey," a familiar voice said.
I looked up. It was my ex-boyfriend, Jason Stanley. A wall of dread washed over me. We had recently broken up this past summer after a horrible fight. We hadn't talked since. So, to say the least, this was awkward.
"Hey, Jason," I said, feigning a smile.
"You're in Rockwell period 6, too?" he asked, sitting down on my left.
"Yeah," I said, tentatively, making as little eye contact as possible.
"Look, Gwen, I know this is awkward but it was going to happen sooner or later. I know I screwed up and I'm sorry. I was so mad at the time and I didn't--" he began apologizing.
"Jason, I don't want to talk about this now," I said, closing my eyes.
Silence filled the hallway.
"I'm sorry, Gwen. I know it's too much to ask, but if you're open to it, I would like a second chance," he said, sincerely.
I turned to look at him, half surprised and half hopeful.
I missed this. I missed him. His shaggy brown hair, his soft green eyes, and his warming smile.
I paused for a minute, thinking over his question. I sighed. "Sure, but I don't think I'm ready yet. I think I need a little more time to figure things out and then we can give it another shot," I said, explaining to him, and making myself clear.
"Yeah, okay. However long you need," he said, giving me a small smile and gorgeous eyes that were filled with hope.
I couldn't stop thinking about our past two years together. He always made me so happy. After we broke up, it felt like there was a missing piece of me I couldn't find. It may be awkward now, but you couldn't deny the past we shared together.
Mr. Rockwell came sauntering down the hallway, his footsteps being herd as he made his way towards the classroom.
When he reached the classroom door and unlocked it, he said, "You two have history?" he asked, eyeing us sitting on the floor beneath him.
Jason looked at me, confused. Could Mr. Rockwell tell we were in a relationship before? Was it that obvious?
"I'm sorry... What did you say?" I asked, confused.
"Do you two have history next? Are you in my period 6 class?" he asked, clarifying himself.
"Oh, yeah. We're in your class," I said, sighing a breath of relief.
