::Snow fell softly around me as I waited for my APC to pick me up. All around me DUP troops were bustling to get ready to head out. Most of the stuff they were packing was food and equipment, but they didn't go lightly on the ammunition.
"How many guns do you guys need?" I muttered to myself.
Since I just packed for myself, I didn't have a big load. I packed a good amount of clothes, toothbrush and other bathroom items, and some granola bars for the way to Seattle. I was wearing my DUP outfit for the field. It was mostly black with yellow shoulder cups, and it was pretty light compared to the bulky stuff that the men had to wear. As I waited patiently for the APC, I could here a sharp voice pierce the winter weather a little ways off to my right.
"Soldier, if you think that you are helping the bio-terrorist threat by sitting around doing nothing, then you are damn wrong! Get your ass up!"
A DUP soldier got up and scurried off, passing me. Augustine glared at him the whole time he ran, looking like she could just pierce through him by just looking at him. Suddenly her gaze averted to me, and she started walking in my direction.
"Dammit," I muttered. I wasn't in the mood for another mother-daughter-like scolding from her. I was hoping that I could go without her talking to me, but we know that that could never happen. As she walked toward me, I took a deep breath, preparing myself for the conversation to come.
"Ruby, it looks like you're ready to go, are you nervous?" She asked.
"No," I said casually, "I know I'm ready, so why would I be nervous?"
Augustine sighed and gave me a sad smile.
Oh no, I thought
"Ruby, I am so proud of you. You know that right? Seeing you train and grow this past week was just amazing. I'm just still worried for you. There is always the unexpected, especially in this scenario, with bio-terrorist running around." She smiled at me and continued, putting on a more serious tone.
"I know you can't promise me to be safe, but please, just watch your back and make good choices, many lives might depend on those choices."
I just kind of stared at her when she finished speaking.
"Thanks," I said eventually. The word hung in the air a bit, making me uncomfortable.
Augustine resumed speaking. "I will come to Seattle in two days, there is still more to prepare here." As she was talking, my APC pulled up. A DUP trooper hopped out and opened the back door for me.
"Remember Ruby," she said hastily, "remember what I said!"
"Ok, ok, Augustine! See you soon I guess," I said. As I walked to the APC, I looked back at Augustine. She looked a little disappointed. Maybe she expected a loving departure with me thanking her and loving her and all of that soft stuff. I'm a soldier, not a softy, especially not towards Augustine.
I slung my bag onto the roomy APC all to myself, and then I climbed in. The DUP trooper driving the APC closed the doors behind me. I sat down, already plugging my earbuds into my phone so that I could listen to music on the way. The engine roared to life and I took one last look at Augustine
She was still standing there, looking at me, a sad expression on her face, almost looking like she wanted more to say to me. The APC started to drive away towards the gates. I was still looking at Augustine. Then, she said something. I couldn't hear her at all, but I could clearly see what she said. My face turned into shock. I looked down at my hands, unable to comprehend what she just said. Trying to rid of the thought, I put my earbuds into my ears and started playing my music, but I knew that these words would haunt me for the rest of my days.
She said I love you.
BOII I'm sorry this chapter is so short. It's more of a filler than an actual chapter but don't worry I'll make longer chapters :D I also tried to make suspense there but I failed so sorry XD
QOTC - If you could manipulate any form of matter, what would it be?
Glass of course! That's why I made the main character a glass Conduit :3 Glass is just super cool and it's everywhere, so I wouldn't have a problem obtaining it :D
