:: "Come on Ruby! Hit the targets! Faster! Faster!" Yelled Augustine. I was trying to hit these flying holographic demons with my glass powers, glass shooting from my hands in the form of spikes. What made it worse was that I had to do it while running, and let me tell you, I am not a good runner.
I tried hitting the targets but I would always trip on something or just run out of breath. After another demon spiraled upward and crashed into me like a bomb, Augustine called the training off. "Ok, ok, that's enough for now Ruby, lets take a 10 minute break." Today it was just me in the training arena. I prefer training alone. The large, brightly lit room was all to myself and not full of other bios. The best thing about training alone is that I could practice a new trick I have been practicing for a couple of days now. Earlier this week, I was bored in my room and decided to play with my powers, making glass float in cool forms and stuff like that. I tried to see if I could form a little stair case and see if it would hold my weight, but eventually, the glass gave away and broke. Fortunately, I did not hit the ground. I noticed two huge, angel-like wings sprout from my back made out of glass. They prevented me from falling, and I knew I had to test these babies out.
Making sure Augustine wasn't watching, I conjured up my glass wings. They were not heavy at all, and I loved the way the light traveled through them, making them look like a Christmas tree. I gave a couple of weak flaps to make sure they wouldn't fall apart from the motion, and then, I pushed off the ground and started flapping harder. Since I was a little girl I have always dreamed of flying, and I was finally doing it. My wings were outstretched like a bird on a current, and man it was such a rush. I noticed some DUP troops looking up and pointing at me, but they didn't stop me. I made some circles in the air, flapping a couple times so that I stayed air born. I felt like a bird flying free. If only I could go outside and do this. After a couple of quick laps, I eventually landed on a concrete platform, my wings disintegrating to small shards of glass.
"Ah, Ruby, there you are." said a cool voice from behind me. Other bios and DUP troops would jump from her voice, but I casually turned around to face her. "Hey Augustine."
"I noticed a stray holographic angel flying around and land, well actually, right where you are standing now, do you know where it went Ruby?"
I played with my fingers a bit and swayed a little in place, biting the inside of my cheek. "Maybe it disintegrated," I lied. I wanted this power to be my little secret. Whenever Augustine finds something new about you and your powers, she manipulates you and that power, making it so that it would help her and her only, not you. These wings, they're not just an awesome sick mode for transportation, but they are my escape. Feeling the wind in my face, I forget everything, and there is no weight on my body to make my muscles sore. It's my little paradise, not Augustine's tool.
"Yes, true, maybe you are right," she said. I knew she didn't believe me, but I didn't care. "You have 5 more minutes until training starts again."
"Ya know," I said cautiously, "Maybe we should just end training right there Augustine, I have been training my butt off this whole week, and I think I'm ready!"
"Ruby, I told you, it is a dangerous world out there! People do not accept us for who we are! I want to prepare you so that you don't get hurt-
"Please, just hear me out for once!" My voice started to get desperate. "You have seen me train, Augustine! I am a thousand times better than your other men, and they're twice as old as me! So what if I had a little trouble with the shooting and running, I know I am ready!" It felt like my blood was boiling a bit. I have had to put up this this whole week, and I was starting to crack.
"Ruby, of course you feel like this. I know my training is not the easiest, but it's correct. I know what I am doing. I just want you to be prepared." Augustine's voice eased up a bit from this sentence. There it was again, that sad light in her eye whenever she tells me that I need to be safe. Why is she being so weird?
"Riiiigghht," I told her, starting to get uncomfortable. "Well, please, consider it. I bet your men are tired too, and I have seen them, they look drained. I think they're ready too." Augustine had a look on her face like she was thinking really hard.
Man I really hope I'm done for the day, I thought
"Ok Ruby, you're right, I think you are ready too. You are leaving tomorrow anyways, so there isn't too much time for more training, go ahead up to your room and clean up. I'll see you tomorrow at 10 am for your deployment."
Augustine smiled at me and then turned around, walking away. I could have sworn I saw her eyes tear up a bit too. Shaking my head, surprised that my talk worked, and that Augustine actually cried, I walked in the direction of my room, preparing for a good nights sleep for my deployment tomorrow.::
