Chapter-4
Nothing to talk aboutUh-oh running out of breath but I, oh I, I've got stamina.
I move my feet to the beat of the song, gliding along the hardwood floor, as I watch my reflection through the mirror hitting every move.
Don't give up, I won't give up, don't give up, no no no.
I sink to the floor with every lyric letting my emotions poor out. With each movement, each step, each turn, I tell a story through it all.
I don't pay attention to the 15 other girls around me doing the same dance, to be honest I didn't even notice them until now.
I try not to be intimidated by the 5 girls sitting at a rectangular table to my left as they intensely watch all 16 of us and our every moves. They notice every kick, turn, step, jump, but most of all every single flaw.
The song finishes and I let out a breath I've held the whole dance.
Lauren walks to the front of the room holding a piece of paper in her hand, a look of arrogance in her admirable eyes.
She stands there in silence letting the tension build thicker and thicker into the air with every aching second.
"You can all leave," she starts her voice echoing through the room. "I'll post the results outside on the schools bulletin board tommorrow morning for all to see who made it, and who failed to meet expectations." She purses her lips, as she notices we're all still here.
"What are you all doing, go." She demands making everyone scurry, gathering there things and walking out the door. I grab my bag walking to the door where a girl holds it open kindly. Before I exit I look back into the dance room catching Lauren's eyes, where she sends me a stone cold stare. Quickly I walk out the door, so I'm now in the schools hallway. I lean against the wall to reassure myself I'll make it, while my fingers find their way to the chain around my neck, they wrap around the charm that dangles at the end, a key charm. By the touch of the worn away fake gold and cold metal, I Instantly feel a relief of comfort. Comfort nothing else in the world can bring me at this moment."Kenny" someone calls from behind me.
The nickname makes my heart freeze and my blood run cold. The nickname brings back so many memories that I tried to forget. My breathing starts to pick up as memories flash back.
**
"Kenny" he whisper yells, as I watch him from my room window. He stands in my front lawn starring up at me, never looking away."Shhhh, you're going to wake my parents." I whisper back.
A smile grows on his face, a smile so visible in the pitch night, it could be mistaken as a star.
"You're hot when you're bossy, ken." He states not bothering to whisper, as if wanting everyone to hear him.
I raise and eyebrow and give him a glare, for his voice level. I put my pointer finger to my lips signaling him to keep it down.
"then may I come up?" He questions still not keeping his voice at a reasonable volume. "Or I'm going to keep this up." He nonchalantly shrugs.
I ignore him, rolling my eyes.
"Kendall," he presses trying to break me. "Kendall?" He continues "Kendall?"
**
"Kendall?" He waves a hand infront of me. I lay my eyes on him acknowledging his presence. "You never told me you were trying out for the dance team." He says beginning to walk but I don't follow.
I gulp to only find a dry throat. Squeezing my eyes shut I take a deep breath, and open my eyes to see Shawn standing before me."Are you coming?" He questions amused, but me? I'm not amused at all.
"never call me Kenny again, got it?" I say sternly.
He doesn't seem affected by my tone, as his smile grows.
"Why not Kenny?" He emphasizes, making my heart pang. " I Like the nickname Kenny." He states matter of factly, causing me to wince, as emotional pain runs through my veins. " I think I'll call you Kenny from now on." He nods to himself in conformation as tears brim my eyes and anger boils inside me. "What do you think Kenny........" he trails off but stops as soon as he spots my glossy eyes.
"Are you okay-" before he can finish his sentence I'm storming off in the opposite direction and not looking back.
I rush down the vacant hallways that are lined with maroon lockers on each side. I begin to hear his footsteps behind me, in reaction I pickup my speed, readjusting my bag on my shoulder as I run down the seeming never ending hallway. A hand lays on my shoulder but I don't stop I continue to run trying to rip from his grip. But his strength over comes me and I'm soon turned around in one swift motion my body pushed up against the lockers both arms are pinned above my head by one of his hands, his heavy breathing fanning my face leaving a lingering minty scent.
"What was that about?" He quickly questions after making sure he has me.
I look anywhere but him not wanting him to see me in a vulnerable state.
"It was nothing." I manage to say looking to my left, then my right, but never infront of me to be faced with his presence. He notices my lack of attention towards him so he lifts my chin up with his pointer finger gently so that I'm facing him eye to eye face to face.
"Hey" he says. I don't say anything all I do is look at him trying my best to show no emotion. He takes the silence as me waiting for him to continue. "Talk to me." He whispers very carefully, as if said too loud it would break me.
I was so close, so close to giving in, so close to breaking down and falling into his arms. When I looked into his brown orbs in that moment he wasn't his cocky arrogant self, he seemed......intent, intent on listening to me, on figuring out what's wrong, he seemed caring. But, I didn't, I didn't give in. And I wouldn't.
Looking at him straight in the eyes I rip my arms from his grip making him step back a bit from my sudden gesture.
"There's nothing to talk about." I monotonely say before walking away leaving him standing alone, as I walk out the doors.
