"We're terribly sorry for the inconvenience, but Ms. Frost will have to reside in a room all by herself." said the clerk behind the desk.
Great, now I have to live all by myself in this overly huge hotel. First I was almost late to the plane for our school trip, then I had to spend 12 hours by a super annoying kid that kept on screaming the whole ride, I have a huge headache, and in addition I have to live in a room that will be boring as hell without a buddy. Why is life so unfair to me?
"Wait, but didn't you say everyone would have someone to live with, Mrs. Gray." I asked not understanding the situation.
"Yes Jess, I did say so, but Miley the girl you were going to room with couldn't make it."
"But why does it have to be me, can't it be someone else?" Putting on my puppy eyes I desperately started clinging to my teacher.
"Mrs. Gray, Please can you switch me with someone. To tell you the truth I'm actually very afraid of being alone, you know monophobia."
"Jess, I'm certain that you'll be fine. Plus this can be your punishment for almost being late to the plane, when I specifically told everyone to be on time."
With those final words Mrs. Gray turned and started to leave. Except I don't give up this easily, my nickname after all is mule. I know not the best nickname, but it's true.
I ran after Mrs. Gray landing on my knees and bowing down in front of everyone in the lobby. "Please Mrs. Gray; I really can't live on my own. I would be fine with it if we were staying here for a few days, but a month! Imagine a whole month being forced to live on your own I really can't do it."
Seeing that Mrs. Gray was becoming even more uncomfortable about being publically humiliated, I started sobbing.
At first I was just sniffing away my "tears", but when Mrs. Gray tried to pick me up from the ground I started crying. I was crying loudly, and even I will admit that I looked like a crazy kid on the floor, crying her eyes out.
I saw Mrs. Gray have a flickering moment of compassion for me, but the next second I was hauled off the ground by my ears.
"Ow! Ow! Please stop, this hurts like hell!" I shouted at my teacher, but in vain I was ignored and pulled towards the group of seniors standing at the end of the lobby, staring at me as if I was an alien from space.
When we reached the group Mrs. Gray finally let go of my ear and pushed me into the row of students, who were ready to hear the instructions they were going to be given for the day. After Mrs. Gray gave me the evil eye, she cleared her throat and started speaking.
"Now, guys, you all, with your roommate, will be given a list of activities for the day. I expect everyone to follow them and be on time to all of the curriculums. You will have an hour to get ready for dinner, so I hope nobody will be late. And you, Jess Frost, will be in big trouble if this happens again. Understood?"
"Yes, Mrs. Gray I understand and will never do this again." I say with both annoyance and embarrassment.
"Good. Now go and settle down into your rooms. Also, I will repeat myself, if anyone comes late to dinner they will be in big trouble. It shouldn't take anyone of you more than an hour to get ready."After talking Mrs. Gray looked at the watch on her left hand and then looked at us shouting, "Get moving, you now only have 55 minutes!"
After scaring the shit out of everyone with her outburst, all kids started piling into the elevators. While standing in line for the elevator, I for a few moments observed the hotel we stopped in. It was around 20 stories high, with about 200 rooms each floor. The front of the hotel was covered all in glass windows, making the inside shine brightly. The Lobby itself was beautifully made; it seemed more like a ballroom then a lobby.
My observations were cut short when Mrs. Gray came up to me."Jess you do know that you can't get into a room without a key, don't you?"
"Ah, yes Mrs. Gray, thank you for reminding me. I almost forget." Uh...Why do I have to be so forgetful of everything? After saying thank you again for the second time, I ran off to the reception.
"Um, excuse me, but can I please have my room key?" I asked hesitantly.
I might be able to make a fool of myself in front of people, but talking to them one on one is very hard. I felt my cheeks warm up from embarrassment, even though I had nothing to be embarrassed off.
The clerk raised her head and eyed me before silently giving me the keys. I stood there awkwardly finally taking the keys and walking back to the elevator.
I personally hate talking to people I never met, for the first time. If I am close to someone I can act like myself in front of the person, but if I don't know them I am as shy as a mouse that doesn't even squeak a word out in the public.
The elevator ride was long. People kept on coming into the elevator when we stopped on a new floor. This made things very suffocating and uncomfortable. I was squished between a very tall, muscular man who probably just finished exercising and a short old woman.
I was trying very hard to breathe normally, but that was almost impossible since the man's sweat was the only thing I could smell. When the elevator reached my floor, I ran out coughing and gagging trying to inhale some fresh air and save my lungs from exploding.
My room was at the very end of the building which gave me time to calm down a bit. When I reached the door to my room I was surprised at the fact that the door was already cracked open. Weird I thought to myself. Aren't all the doors supposed to be locked? Thinking that one of the workers forgot to close the door, I ignored it and came into the room.
The room itself wasn't too small or too big, even though I think I would be more comfortable if the room was smaller. There was a small living room with a couch and a TV facing it. Joined to it was the bedroom which had a queen sized bed, a walk in closet, small bookshelf, and a big and small shelf for clothing.
While exploring the room, I noticed a small briefcase that was locked. Probably a costumer left it when they were leaving, I thought to myself. I'll just have to return it to the reception after I eat dinner.
With those thoughts I unpacked and prepared myself for dinner. I lost track of time and when I came out of the shower, I was already two minutes late to dinner.
"Crap," I say under my breath Mrs. Gray will kill me. I swear this trip wasn't a reward, but a punishment for me. Mrs. Gray personally hated my guts. I have no idea why, but I know its Liz's doing.
Liz isn't a stuck-up cheerleader or anything like that. She's just best friends with one of the cutest guys at our school, and that gave her an advantage. Everyone knew her and wanted to be close to her just because they hoped she would help them get together with her friend. In addition she's a straight A student, so all the teachers adored her, especially Mrs. Gray.
After taking out my shoes from the suitcase and putting them on, I ran out the door and down the hall towards the elevator as fast as a Puma.
When I arrived at the dining hall everyone was already there standing in line while Mrs. Gray checked off who was there and who was missing. As quietly as I could I crouched down and duck walked to one of the corners of the room where the last person was standing. I was so proud of myself when I stepped into the line without the hawk-eyed teacher noticing me.
Mrs.Gray finally came up to me reaching for her pen to check off my name from the list of people that were present in the hall.
But nothing goes according to plan when it involves my life, because the next second, before Mrs. Grays pen checks off my name, I hear the voice that annoys and irritates me the most shouting, "Excuse me Mrs. Gray, but Jess came in five minutes late so why are you marking her off of the list?"
I didn't even have enough time to process the question, but Mrs. Gray's face was already turned towards me with a very stern expression on it. And in that exact moment I knew that I was in some big shit.
