Jay's POV
"I'm sorry Sir, but visiting hours are over. I suggest you to come back earlier tomorrow", said the hospital's receptionist with a smile as fake as her boobs.
"Come on it's only 7:30, not midnight. Who's going to care if I'm half an hour late ? Just tell me his room number, no one have to know about it," I replied, annoyed. I mean, I left a hot chick in my bed and rushed to the hospital to see Luke, one of my mates, who was involved in a fight. In a bar. At 5 in the afternoon. Stupid Luke.
"Again, I'm sorry for the inconvinience Sir, you can come back tomorrow within visiting hours, between 10 AM and 7 PM," she says with her fucking fake smile. She's really getting on my nerves.
"I. Want. To. See. Lucas. Young. Right. Now. Understood ? Or do I need to spell it for you ? Who the hell do you think you are ?" I ask in a threatening tone.
Looking uncomfortable, she was about to say something when I heard an incredibly raspy voice behind me speak. "Excuse me Ma'am do you have a minute ?", asked the man. I swinged on my feet to give the little fucker who interrupted my encounter with the stupid lady one of my death looks, but couldn't find a word to say when I saw her. In fact, it wasn't a man, it was a young woman. And what a woman...
In front of me was standing the most surprising creature that could possibly exist. She had long, silk looking brown hair, forest green eyes, full and pulpy red lips, a clear and free of imperfections skin. She was wearing black cotton leggings and a white shirt, who hugged her gorgeous body. She was thin, yet curvy in all the right places. But there was something about her, some sort of aura emanating from this girl. The sadness written all over her beautiful face was so deep that she seemed to be the victim of an awful tragedy, who lived the unlivable. She looked like she was the ghost of a chaotic past, wandering under the rumble of a secret world, a world that belonged to an era that was now over.
The beautiful stranger seemed to hang on memories of another life, a happy, carefree one, as if she was self harming herself by realizing over and over again that it belonged to the past. All of the emotions that I, somehow, could read on her angelic face, begged to differ from the usual human ones. She seemed above them, some sort of spectre who wasn't just a "someone", but a presence, patiently waiting to leave, even painfully, the world we lived in.
For the first time in my life, I was scared. I was so scared that this young woman, yet so old already, took one more step and collapsed, submerged by a wave of too painful memories, carrying on her frail shoulders a too heavy weight of melancholy and bitterness.
For the first time, I felt an irrepressible need to support her, to stop the constant bleeding of her heart, even if I inevitably knew that her soul would never completely heal, that her wound was too deep to cicatrize, that her scars will never disappear."How can I help you Miss ?", asked the receptionist, pulling me away from the hurricane of thougts striking in my head.
"My name is Poppy Reston, I have an appointment with Doctor Faith", replied the angel. Even her voice was unique, raspy yet soft, manly yet seductive, sad yet different. At first I thougt that she maybe smoked a lot, but then I felt like it was more than that. There was some kind of vulnerability escaping from the words she pronounced, her fragility was driving me crazy.
"You will have to wait for an hour or so, Miss Reston, Doctor Faith had an emergency, she's still in reanimation's service. Sorry for the inconvinience. As for you, Sir, I suggest that you come back at a decent hour tomorrow", said the woman. It made me realize that it was really late for an appointment, and this new layer of mystery made me want to get to know Poppy even more.
