There was a duck in the garden.

Killian looked in panic through the window, the washing up temporarily forgotten.
He was supposed to be installing a new fence today, but ever since picking up one of Henry's books, that were always lying around, he couldn't look at the birds in the same way.

Really Killian? Ducks?

He could almost taste Emma's exasperation.

This steeled his stomach. He was a pirate for crying out loud, the most notorious one to ever sail the realms! How could Captain Hook possibly be intimidated by something as weak and insignificant as a bloody duck?

Did you know that ducks kill at least 900 people a ye-

Killian gritted his teeth and glared at the duck. Bloody bird.

Henry slowly made his way down the street, biting nonchantly into an apple.
His schoolbag was slung over one shoulder, a dishevelled tie hung around his neck and the neat hair from this morning was now replaced with a dishevelled mess.

Henry hummed as he walked up the path of Emma and Hook's house. His fingers had just closed around the door handle, when he heard an angry shout from the back garden.

'Hook?'

Henry hurried round the side of the house, worry rushing in his veins.

What he hadn't expected to find was his pirate stepfather (well almost), holding a sword to the throat of a...duck?

'Henry?'

An expression that was a mix of relief and shame crossed Hook's face. Henry laughed in disbelief.

'Is that a duck? Why is there-are you scared of a duck?'
Hook went bright red.

'No.'

Henry rolled his eyes. 'Put the sword away, and let's go inside for some hot cocoa with cinnamon.'
Seeing Hook's hesitation, he added. 'The duck can sort itself out. Mom will be back soon anyway.'

His last words seemed to have the most effect, and Hook seemed to shake himself out of his trance.

'Yes lad, I suppose you have a point.'

Throwing a last distrustful look at the offensive creature, he followed Henry back into the house.
