Love

Why do we celebrate love only with candy hearts and chocolate, roses and perfume?

Certainly, one side of love is as pink and sweet as candy hearts. That's the sweetness we reach for greedily, all our lives ~ from the comfort of the blankie to the softness of the teddy to the rapture when that special person finally laughs at one of our jokes.

But what about the other side? What about ~ when that teddy is taken away ~ the anguish, the rage, the childishly plotted revenge? What about the stab to the heart when that special person doesn't laugh but instead regards us like the gum stuck to his or her shoe?

What about the way sometimes, in the history of love, a stab to the heart has turned into. . . well, a stab. To the heart.

Why don't we celebrate the dark side of love? It's almost as if most people try to pretend the dark side isn't there. It's hard to believe, but I sometimes suspect that not everyone rejoices in gloom and rage and shadows the way we do.
