i didn't see her again for almost a month.

i stayed in the lobby of my apartment building longer than usual, hoping to see her, but i never did.

i wanted to see her again.

when i did it wasn't as grand as i had imagined.

she was at a starbucks down the road from the apartments. and she was with a boy.

why did this bother me?

i saw her smile for the first time.

i left when i saw her.

the next morning there was a knock at my door. groggy and irritated, i trudged through my messy home, checking the time. it was 7:32 in the morning. i groaned, attempting to rub the sleep from my eyes as i opened the door.

"hello, your mail was in my friend's mailbox and she sent me to deliver it."

it was the boy that was with the girl.

he stood as tall as me, with brown eyes and a dark fringe. he stretched the letters out to me and smiled.

"oh, thank you." i said.

"yeah, sure. i'm dan." he said, smiling. "i live three doors down with my roommate."

"cool."

he cocked his head to the side. "you're american?"

"yeah."

"oh, cool. what's your name?"

i pause. why does he care? why does he want to know?

"liza."

"hi, liza. you should meet my friend. her name is dodie, and she..."

he kept talking and talking, but i tuned him out.

was dodie the girl from the roof?

"...well, i've got to go. see you around!" dan brightly smiled as he walked away.

the girl said that to me before she left.
