"Are you sure you're gonna be OK getting yourself home again today, Liv?" asked Tina as they pulled up in front if the school.

"Yeah mom." replied Livia, smiling, "I caught a ride yesterday."

          "Really?" asked Tina, "From who?"

"Her name's Nyx. New friend of mine."

          "Nyx?" said Tina, "Funny name."

"Funnier than Livia Olympia?" said Livia, smirking softly. Her mother chuckled in response.

          "You're welcome." responded Tina.

Still smiling, Livia said, "Bye mom. See you later."

"Bye honey." replied Tina as Livia closed the passenger door behind her, and Tina's car behind her, and Tina's car, a beated chevy, pulled out.

Livia smoothed her raven hair out of her face as it flailed in the wind. She had her mother's hair.

          "Hey Livia, wait up!"

She turned to look behind her, and jogging over to her was Nyx. She was dressed in black torn jeans, a t-shirt emblazoned with the logo of Danzig, and what looked like a black army jacket, her hair was tousled and her makeup was on point (on point being extremely pale with elaborate eyeliner designs and perfect black lipstick).

Livia wished she was that good at applying makeup. In her opinion, her's was slapdash at best.

"Hey." she said, smiling over at Nyx when she had caught up.

"Hey, what's up?" said Nyx, smiling back.

"Well, the sun's gone, it's windy, and I'm locked in a room with people who dislike me. I'm great." she replied, smiling.

"You and me both." said Nyx, giggling.

Livia was starting to think that Nyx was a breed of humanity that's always smiling and in a good mood and its impossible to not smile when you're with them, which Livia did.

"Well this is my homeroom, see you at lunch." said Nyx, snapping Livia out of her thoughts.

"Oh, OK, see you then." she said, giving one last smile before walking on to Mr. Barrett's. Inside at his desk, Mr. Barrett was once again lost in his book, and the classroom was about half full. Livia made her way to her desk, waving a hello to Eldric, who smiled and waved back, and she sat down and opened her copy of Anne Rice's The Vampire Armand to where she had left off.

----------------------------------------------------------

The lunchroom was packed, its six-chair tables filled with chattering groups of students gathered around the larger teacher's table. Livia, Eldric, and Nyx sat as far as possible from all the chaos.

When Livia reached their isolated table, Nyx and Eldric were chattering excitedly about something.

"What's up with you two?" she asked, sitting down. They looked at her and Eldric said,

"We're going to Demon's Hole this Saturday. You in?"

          Livia wrinkled her brow, "Where?"

This time Nyx responded, "It's an all age goth dance club. Just a place for freaks. It's really cool."

Livia smiled and it widened with each word Nyx spoke, "I'd love to. What time?"

"We were planning on leaving around 10. We could pick you up at your house if you want." said Nyx.

"Sure," said Livia, smiling. She gave them her address and the three descended onto their lunch.

-------------------------------------------

"And then he ran back onstage and jumped into the crowd." said Livia into the phone receiver.

Nyx giggled on the other end of the line, "You sure know how to pick them."

Livia smiled, remembering her ex, the would-be rockstar Levi, "That was actually a week before mom and I moved here. He was a bit cut up about it."

"Did his band give you a farewell concert?" asked Nyx, her music playing loudly in the background.

"Yeah," replied Livia, "At the end of it, after his bandmates left to go smoke out back, he got up onstage and played Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). Then he kissed me and went for a smoke out back."

          "Aweeee, cute."

"Yeah. It really wasn't meant to be, though."

"Is Wormwood Smoke still together?" asked Nyx.

"I think so. I haven't spoken to any of them since I moved."

"Oh, ok. So what's up?" asked Nyx.

"Just cleaning up my room a bit. Putting stuff away. Are you listening to Cinema Strange?"

"Oh, yeah." said Nyx, "I love them. And sorry Livia, gotta go. Dad asked me to pick him up."

          "Kay, bye." said Livia.

"Bye." said Nyx, and she hung up.

Livia set down her phone and continued organizing her CD's by artist. Green Day, Halestorm, Immortal, Joan Jett.

She spotted her mother's car pulling in out of the corner of her eye. Seconds later the door opened.

          "Livia, I'm home."

Livia quickly grabbed the silver box and buried it in one of the cardboard boxes, and pocketed her pocketknife. Opening it would have to wait until later.
