He walks across the wood chips
Toward the pirate ship
Wondering what would become of it
If he took his feet and walked on in
Everyone else runs and screams
Chasing sunlight and made up dreams
But one girl stands apart
Under the plastic awning
Her hair is a cloud of curls
Her eyes are like night dawning
She watches him walking
With a shy-ish sort of stare
Her eyes shift away
When they see him looking there
He looks down again
Don't be embarrassed
He wants to say
Can I come aboard your pirate ship?
Will you let me play?
But he feels to frightened by the black in her eyes
So he shuffles back away
Beneath the scattered sky
