Chapter 2: The Kindling

The week dragged by, uneventfully.  I stared at the clock. Ticking away. A second less of my life, that I will never get back. I just don't know what to do, anymore. Do I go, or do I stay? Why does the ceiling, always look like its going to fall in on me.

The kids here are so loud. They run run up the stairs, and scream happily. I despise their problems. They had to worry about boys, and friends. They were petty.

I would go. I would start over, and learn to move on. I realize now that I would never forget, but I agree with Eric. Maybe I could move on.

A week later I found myself sitting in the same small room as a week before. Alex, Eric, and Helin walked in.

"Good afternoon," Helin chirped.

"Hello dear," Alex replied.

"Can Hennry and I talk to Ash, for a little, before we start the paperwork."

"Sure"

I was stunned " Ummmm...what?"

"Lets go talk about it."

I followed Alex and Eric to chairs, as Helin walked out. "OK, so, what?"

"You are predictable. Everyone is to a point. We knew you would say yes. Your curiosity, would take over eventually."

"Right....ummm....well?"

"We will be picking you up, tomorrow, if we can file all the paper work. We have already been working on it all  week."

"Ya, thanks for telling me." I glared at her from across the table. "What should I bring?"

"If you don't have anything of importance, you don't need to bring anything. When we get to the compound, you will get new clothing. You can bring personal items if you need them, but you should pack a few things for Helin's sake."

"OK. Is that all?" I couldn't help it. I felt a little giddy. When I turned 10 there was almost no hope that I was getting out of the foster homes, but now, at 16, I was adopted.

"That will be all. We have a lot of paperwork to finish. It will take a few months for the paperwork to all be filed, but I think that you will be able to come with us tomorrow. We have been working on paperwork for a long time now."

I ran up the stairs, not even stopping to test the stairs, into my room. I was met by a few kids loitering around the room. "What are you so excited about?" one of the girls asked.

"I'm leaving!"

"You got adopted? How much acting did you have to do to sound nice and not crazy for a change?" The girl next to her punched her in the arm, and sent her a withering look. "Well, I for one am happy for you." She smiled at me. I smiled back.

The other girl spoke up again, "Ya we are all happy.....that your leaving"

"Right, but if you were so much better then me, then why are you still in foster care?" She stood up and walked out of the room. I almost felt bad for saying it. Almost.

I pack few things only the essentials: Clothing and toiletries. That's all I had, and needed. I put it in the backpack that I had under my bed. I always had a  backpack of some sort under the bed, for when I moved.

I ran downstairs, and sat in the kitchen absorbing every  detail and picture that they showed me and Helin, of my new home. It was huge. There was six bedrooms, two and a half bath, a livable basement, and a large kitchen (with all new, marble counter tops) It was my dream house.
