I sat alone in the pews. I listen silently at the words that were spoken. I have heard these words over and over and over. Still I came and listened everyday. Why would I do something so boring? Because I am a person made up of a series of schedules and times. Its just part of my job. I know the beginning and end to a person. I know everything eventually. I glanced down at my hands, I slowly untied the ribbon that was attached to the side of the pew. The old ribbon fell off and landed without a noise. I watched as the beautiful red ribbon fell to the hard wooden ground. It was so silent and graceful, I watched it fall. This movement made the old man look over. I stand up and bow my head, something I have done so much in the past lifetime its second nature.
"I am sorry for my wrongs, father." I say softly. When I see him stare at me dumbfounded, with that I vanished.
I reappeared outside of the church, it was beautiful and old. I couldn't help but spare a few moments of time and admire the building. I admired the stone architecture. The old Victorian style church was like the one I always looked across the street from my house. It made people want to go in and be invited with religion and love. Something I only wish was part of my childhood. Something I have been missing all the years of my life.
"Are you ready Madam' Red?" I nod and turn around.
"I am Ryder." I sigh and look him in the eyes and recompose myself from showing weakness. It was something he hated seeing.
"Sylvia Red compose yourself right now!" Ryder barked at me.
I bow my head. "Yes sir." I bring my head back up quickly and step inside the black car. Ryder always had a soft spot for cars like the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro. He was like an old man trapped inside a younger one's body. On the outside he appeared late twenties, and the inside he acted like a fifty year old man. It was odd. His thick accent didn't help either. I look up and saw Ryder looking straight ahead, once again lost in thought. These were moments when he looked the most vulnerable, the moments where I wished I knew what was going through his head. Another part of me on the other hand, didn't want to know, who knows what kind of memories could be cut off from the rest of the world contained only in him. The idea frightened me. I knew he had a family, or a girlfriend. I knew that something happened to them. But that was it. I have no idea if she is alive, or dead, nor did I ever ask. Most people would ask, but I prefer to let people tell me. I hate to seem like a bother, even though I probably am more of one at times for not asking questions.
"Sir." I hear the driver call from the front seat.
Ryder looks through my window and the slightest bit of actual emotion cross his face. The emotion was a mix of surprise and concern. Never has he ever shown concern for anybody of the human race. This only increased my worry. I then turn and look out the window. It was a huge house. I couldn't help but gape at the huge doors and long stairs that lead to the door. I look at Ryder. Unsurprisingly his face was back to its usual blank, emotionless form.
"Sir Ryder, is there something wrong?" The driver turned to reveal his black soulless eyes.
Ryder looked at him and said. "I didn't know we were going to be visiting the Robinsons." He cleared his throat and opened his door. He walked out and closed the door behind him. I let myself out and quickly follow him towards the door. He nods at my swiftness and continues to make his way along the winding walk way that lead to the stairs. Once we made it to the stairs Ryder stops and turns to me. "The Robinsons can see, hear, and sense us. Clear?"
With my eyebrows pulled together and clear confusion written all over my face. I finally state what I have always been taught. "I thought you said in my training that humans can't see, hear nor sense us, they aren't strong enough."
Ryder shakes his head. "I am glad you actually listened at the mini lesson, but the Robinsons aren't exactly human, as you can see they are wealthy, and highly respected people."
I nod understanding everything. "What are they then?"
Ryder smirks. "Vampires."
"Vampires? They are blood suckers?"
I achieved a grunt and Ryder nods his head. "Yes, blood suckers are normally regarded for being ruthless and nasty things. But Robinsons are odd vampires, they chose to live among humans and strive upon their stupidity."
I roll my eyes. "Okay, sure."
Ryder straightens his jacket and begins to walk up the long stairs.
I follow silently.
When we reached the top of the stairs the door was already opened. Ryder nods as if saying 'I told you they can see, hear, and sense us.' which wouldn't surprise me if he was saying that in his head. I huff and follow him through the door. When we walk in we both were surrounded by men and women in black and white maid and butler outfits. I looked around, they were loaded. I was unable to wrap my mind on how much money they could possess. I then follow Ryder into a long never ending hallway and finally reaching a dark wood door. He knocked once and opened the door. Closing it in my face. I huff and was tempted to kick the door, but it was expensive looking and I didn't feel like getting a family of loaded blood suckers on the list of things that would kill me. So I contained my anger and cross my arms and lean against the wall. I looked over the edge of the hallway and watch the maids and butlers hustle around, going to doors walking in and coming out with random items or returning with an item This family was big, and wealthier beyond belief. I couldn't help but wish that my family was this wealthy. But instead we ended up being messed up and incomplete. Missing many things that an average family needed.
"What are you doing there?" A small voice called out. I looked around me and saw a young boy with blonde hair and shy brown eyes.
I was silent for a bit. "I came with a friend, he is talking in that room over there."
The little boy's eyes lit up, "Your a reaper!"
I looked at him. "Um... I-"
"Silvia! Lets go." I heard Ryder call, then continuing in a harsher tone when he saw the boy, "Now."
I felt my eyes go large and I followed Ryder through the hallways, down the stair case and out the front door. As we made our way down the stairs I wanted to know what made him so harsh towards the little boy. "Sir.." I ask but then quickly stop, I hoped he didn't hear me.
"Yes."
Oh crap... "Nothing..."
"Just spit it out." He snapped.
"Who," I then quickly change what I was going to say. "Why are you so-"
"Silvia those are vampires, they don't deserve my respect." He said simply and walked down the steps quickly.
"Jeez, somebody is in a bad mood." After I said it, I got myself thinking, Ryder is always in some kind of bad mood. Something always seems to happen, a broken car, burnt toast, anything. It was like bad fortune was his destiny.
"I heard that." Ryder looked at me.
