"Jen! Come on bring that box in," my mom said, or more like yelled from inside our new house. I hated that we had to move from our beautiful big city to this small little rundown town. It's too boring, I like to be entertained by lights and sounds not bugs and broken wood.
I sluggishly bring the box in, almost dropping it a few times because I was about to lose my grip on it and it was so heavy. I say the box down on the ground next to my brother jaden in the living room. I looked around at all the boxes and the only thing I could think of was 'I don't want to keep doing this. I'm gonna ditch."
"Hey mom, me and jaden are going to go explore the town ok? Thanks bye!" I yelled dragging jaden with me out the door, grabbing our skateboards in the process.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Why did u do that??" Jaden ask as we skate to the little town that was farther away from out house than it looked."Because, half those boxes weigh more then I do and I didn't want to be stuck carrying them in all day, it's boring" I complain, kicking off the pavement to go a little faster.
"Ugh you complain to much" jaden says rolling his eyes and doing the same to catch up with me.
It was a small little part of the town, which is saying something considering the whole town is so small. There were stores on each side of the road, all run down and falling apart by the looks of it, yet people kept coming in and out of said buildings. There were kids playing on the sidewalks and the streets, aging from around 7-15.
"They probably don't get a lot of cars around here if they are comfortable playing in the street" I thought to myself.
"Hey you two the new kids?" Someone asked a few steps in front of us. Me and jaden had gotten off out boards by now so we walked up to the person who grabbed out attention.
"Ya you could say that," I tell them.
"Cool, the names Taylor. What's yours?".
"I'm jenelle, but you can call me jen, and this is my brother jaden," I introduce.
We all talk a little more about random things, trying to get to know racketeer and the town.
"So what house are y'all moving into?" Taylor asks.
"the one nearest the forest I believe, why?" Jaden ask.
Everyone went quiet after jaden spoke. Kids stopped playing, people's conversations ended and everyone was starring straight at us.
"Why so silent all of the sudden? Did he say something wrong?" I ask looking around confused by the sudden silence.
"You've never heard of the tale of the 'forbidden forest?'" A random stranger asks. Me and jaden shake our heads no.
"Well, apparently word is that the forest had seemed to be all fine and dandy, until they built the town around it. Everything was fine at first, no one ever messed with the forest, they left it alone had no need to go near it, until someone went into the forest to go retrieve one of the kids balls.
Came back few days later scratched up and bloody, nearly on the edge of dying. At first everyone thought it was a coincidence, maybe there were wild animals in the forest that no one had spotted yet, but it just got worst with time. Suddenly more and more got hurt. Not just people, animals too. They would go running into the forest some never returning, others ending up near the edge of the forest dead.
Up until two years ago It had only been animals that never returned from the forest, until Daniel went in there," the teenage boy said.
"Who's Daniel?" I ask intrigued.
"He was a friend of ours. Someone who always thought they were so tough and brave. He hated how everyone was scared of the forest. One day he had enough of it and decided to show us all that nothing was wrong with it. So he went in but, even after all these years, he still hasn't returned. Some think he got lost, others think he made it through but ran away, but most think he's dead, and I'd have to agree with the being dead one," the boy explains.
"Oh gosh, that's terrible. I'm sorry." I said feeling bad for asking.
"It's fine now, but stay away from the forest for your own safety. Don't even go two feet near the fence. You hear?" He warned
"How old was Daniel?" I asked Taylor.
He looked deep I thought like he was trying to remember. "He was 14, just turned 14, when he left, so he would be about 16 now. Today's his birthday actually, and the house that y'all are moving into use to be his too his mom sold the house out of grief," and with that Taylor left us too.
