Outlining and Structuring

By this stage, you should have a good idea of the large-scale structure of your story, and you have only spent a day or two. Well, if you’re hopeless you may have spent as much as a week, but it doesn't matter. If the story is horrid, you know it now, rather than after months spent on a rambling first draft that won’t be noticed at all. So, now just keep developing the story—take several hours and expand each chapter-section of your story summary into a full paragraph. All but the last paragraph should end in something suspenseful or unexpected. The final paragraph should tell how the story ends. At the end of the exercise, you have a pretty decent five- or six-page outline of the story.
